Project Update: Legend of Owlbear Art Process

Hey Caretakers,
We're chugging along with our calendars, and working to get things moving in layout and finishing the art, (as well as any extras we'll be making).

I saw a bunch of great recommendations on what to do, one idea thats sorta sticking with me is a sort of Nintendo Power/Game Manual guide (not sure if it will make it to print, but digital for sure will be a bit of fun). Magnets although they were fun to do, got really heavy for us (esp as multiple years of calendar magnets were stacking up). We might revisit those but for right now, we're working on getting sketches for pins/stickers.

I did want to give you guys a peek behind the curtain on some of the pieces, and here we go.
For our first piece we did, our Legend of Hoot-Screech! Our core inspiration is, of course, the retro Legends of Zelda games (this one is Minish cap), but all of Game Boy Advanced games were great.

This was the image that was coming to mind of what i was envisioning, in that our character would be front and center, doing something.

So to start off, we began with some sketches

then we needed to figure out aspect ratio for the calendar page size

then Koit did his magic and his first color pass, which was pretty solid

We did a little bit of a drill down in the top right weapon equipment, focusing on the owlbears paws as your weapon..I felt like the open paw was far more readable from a distance.

Then for the secondary item, we went with some berries. Didnt fully think about what they did, but they are fitting.
Then we also had to come up with a currency..since gems didnt make sense, we decided on golden acorns (because that seems like a worthy woodland creature currency)

Then it was time to decide on our color palette
we also moved the icons, cause the UI was taking a lot of space and moved things to better fit a calendar view

The extremes made it easier to fall back, but between top left and middle right, I did like the additional grass detail that was coming through (part of it was that color swaps were making some disappear which led to some confusion when picking swatches).

But, all together we landed on this beauty as our final!!

Anyways, there is more to come, and more to show off!!
Thank you all for your support, and let us know whats the next skecth to completion you'd like to see?

Caretaker Andreas
