Welcome to Fantasy Heroes Unbound — a new, extensive core rules set that builds upon and unleashes the potential of the Fifth Edition rules of the world’s most popular fantasy RPG (both the 2024 and 2014 editions).

Offering near-limitless character options, Fantasy Heroes Unbound harnesses player creativity and advanced DM tools to enhance your role-playing experience. These stand-alone rules bring a balanced, point-based framework to the standard Fifth Edition foundation. With 14 new Classes, fully deconstructed PHB Classes, 12 new Species, and a diverse array of features, abilities, system mechanics, and combat options, Fantasy Heroes Unbound reveals the proverbial magic behind the curtain of traditional fantasy RPG design.

It’s time to reimagine and take control of the Fifth Edition RPG system to make it your own. Welcome to the beginning of your next great fantasy role-playing adventure!

The word “Unbound” in the game’s title isn’t simply a fanciful description – it’s a signal to players concerning what Fantasy Heroes Unbound is about, and it carries multiple meanings.

Creativity is unbound. Players aren’t constrained with a limited number of options that may be incompatible with how they perceive their character’s identity, power set, and adventuring goals. The vast choices in the core rulebook give players near-infinite character creation flexibility.

The world is unbound. Although the game primarily plays within the fantasy genre, players can decide the type of setting in which they want to adventure – whether it’s high fantasy, grimdark fantasy, romantic fantasy, or even urban fantasy and science fantasy in a modern setting.

The system is unbound. While design decisions for the traditional Fifth Edition PHB are notably guided by the concept of “bounded accuracy”, Fantasy Heroes Unbound gives gamers multiple toolkit modules to move beyond those constraints to create the role-playing experience they desire. Sections in the core rulebook detail Class design, spell creation, monster builds, feature customisation, and much more.

Fantasy Heroes Unbound offers gaming groups exactly what they need to bring the Fifth Edition game mechanics and their role-playing vision together.

Meet the Classes of Fantasy Heroes Unbound
Hey all! We're less than a month away from launch! Today we wanted to go over a few of the classes you'll be able to play in Fantasy Heroes Unbound.

Your Class gives your hero a starting framework, but in Fantasy Heroes Unbound, it doesn't have to dictate exactly who they'll become.

The game introduces 14 original Classes, built from the ground up using the Unbound framework. As your character advances, Bonus Points and Attributes give you opportunities to shape that starting archetype around your own character concept. And if you love the traditional Fifth Edition Classes, those remain compatible too.
Today, we're introducing four of the new Classes waiting in Fantasy Heroes Unbound.

Biohunter
Biohunters transform themselves to become formidable warriors and slayers, augmenting their bodies with powerful Aspects that reflect their calling.
Most belong to orders and dedicate themselves to protecting others, even when those same people may fear what they've become. Their physical enhancements and combat training make them dangerous opponents, but there's plenty of room to decide exactly what kind of Biohunter your character becomes.
Think:  warrior, devoted protector, dangerous rogue experiment

Dynamancer
Pick a Concept. Then start imagining what you could do with it.
Dynamancers dedicate themselves to mastering a broad area of magical influence, wielding Mana to manipulate their chosen facet of reality. That Concept could be rooted in traditional magic, divine power, psionics, music, astrology, or something more unusual.
Creativity and understanding are just as important to a Dynamancer as raw magical power.
Think: highly specialized magic shaped around a concept you choose.

Outworlder
Sometimes adventure begins very, very far from home.
Outworlders are travellers between realities, including some who never intended to leave their home plane at all. They learn to harness dimensional energies, sense hidden threats, replicate the abilities of those around them, and eventually open gateways between realms.
Some even come from a strange, magic-poor world called Earth.
Think: dimensional traveller, accidental hero, adaptable support character.

Voidreaver
Voidreavers combine martial training with the primordial power of the Void.
Rather than simply throwing more magic at their enemies, these warriors specialize in suppressing the powers of others, making them particularly dangerous to foes who depend on active magic.
Their reputation can be fearsome, but embracing the Void doesn't inherently make a Voidreaver grim or sinister. What they choose to do with that power is another matter entirely.
Think: countermagic warrior, mage hunter, wielder of the fifth element.

And that's only four of the 14 original Classes included in Fantasy Heroes Unbound, alongside options like the Adventurist, Binder, Mechanist, and more.

And your Class is still only a starting point.

Fantasy Heroes Unbound's progression system gives characters Bonus Points at multiple Levels that can be spent on Attributes of your choice. This flexibility takes the place of traditional fixed Subclass options, allowing you to develop your own archetype through the Attributes you select.

Which of these four would you play first?
Let us know in the poll at the bottom of this update! And if none of them have claimed your next character yet, don't worry. We still have ten more Classes to introduce.

Fantasy Heroes Unbound launches on September 8 on BackerKit.

Meet The Species!
Meet the Species of Fantasy Heroes Unbound

One of the first decisions you'll make in Fantasy Heroes Unbound is choosing the species that shapes your hero's journey.

Each species offers its own culture, history, and unique abilities, opening the door to new character concepts and stories. Today, we're introducing four of the many species you'll find in Fantasy Heroes Unbound.

Anthro

Anthros are as varied as the animal kingdom itself.

Inspired by countless creatures, each Anthro develops unique strengths that reflect their heritage. No two are exactly alike, making them one of the most diverse peoples you'll encounter in Fantasy Heroes Unbound.

If your ideal hero is agile, fierce, clever, or somewhere in between, an Anthro gives you the freedom to create a character that's truly your own.

Elmin

The Elmin carry the power of the elements within them.

Born from the primal forces of creation, they trace their history back to the earliest days of the world. Fire, water, earth, and air shape not only their abilities, but their identity.

Ancient, powerful, and deeply connected to the world around them, the Elmin offer a character concept unlike anything found in traditional fantasy.

Mycellan

Mycellan may resemble other humanoids at first glance, but their fungal origins set them apart.

Their unique biology has made them the target of those who would exploit them, leading many Mycellan to become adventurers through necessity rather than choice.

Resilient, resourceful, and unlike any hero you've played before, Mycellan bring a fresh perspective to every adventure.

Treeling

Treelings are living embodiments of the forest.

Patient, thoughtful, and capable of living for centuries, they prefer diplomacy over conflict. But when their homes or those they protect are threatened, few can match their strength.

If you've ever wanted to play an ancient guardian with roots deep in the natural world, the Treeling offers a character unlike any other.

These are just four of the twelve original species you'll discover in Fantasy Heroes Unbound.

Every species offers its own history, culture, and unique approach to adventure, giving you even more ways to build the hero you've always imagined.
