Last time I posted here, I said I’d be back when we had an official announcement about what’s next for Sentinels. We’re not quite at that announcement yet, but I can give you a little news about when to expect news: we’ll have more to share about several Sentinels projects early next year!
Yes, I am being deliberately vague. For now! There’s a lot I’m looking forward to talking about, and we’re working on getting everything ready so we can give those announcements the attention they deserve.
In the meantime, I wanted to show you something else we’ve been working on as we build Greater Than Games back up. Something I think quite a few of you would enjoy.
Defenders of the Realm: Definitive Edition is now live on Gamefound! Some of you may know Richard Launius’s original Defenders of the Realm, a cooperative fantasy game about heroes protecting Monarch City from invading armies and their monstrous leaders. We’ve been working with Richard on a Definitive Edition, and I’ve had a great deal of fun digging into what makes these defenders tick, what makes their enemies dangerous, and what happens when you put them all on the same map.
If you’ve played much Sentinels, you probably know how much I enjoy making characters whose mechanics tell you who they are. I want you to get to know someone by playing their cards, making their decisions, and discovering what they can do with a little help from their friends. There’s a LOT of that here.
There’s a goblin sellsword who puts his coins to work, a dwarf mage who prepares scrolls for just the right moment, and a half-giant barbarian who becomes increasingly dangerous as she gets hurt. They each have their own deck and abilities, and putting different groups together gives you different answers to the realm’s many, many problems.
One of my favorite parts is that the defenders share their Day phase, acting in whatever order makes sense for the team. You can start carrying out a plan, get some help from another defender, and then pick up where you left off. Clear the minions out of someone’s way. Get the right person into position. Help turn an almost-good-enough attack into the hit you needed!
The cards you play collect in heaps, and those heaps help fuel the enemy’s next Dark phase. So, when you’re all excitedly figuring out how much you can accomplish together, there’s also the small matter of what you’re giving the monsters permission to do afterward.
The core game comes with wooden pieces and everything you need to play. We’re also building out an expansion through stretch goals, with optional miniature packs becoming available if we reach their funding thresholds. There’s plenty more about all of that on the campaign page, and we’ll be sharing gameplay, character spotlights, and more throughout the campaign.
Getting GTG back on its feet has meant a lot of work from our little team. Getting to share that work with you again has been one of the best parts. I’m excited about this game, I’m excited about what’s ahead for Sentinels, and I’m grateful that we get to keep making things for your tables.
If Defenders looks like something your group would enjoy, we’d love to have you join us! And if you know someone who would be particularly enthusiastic about fighting a frost dragon with a deeply questionable plan, please send them our way.
Until next time, keep on saving the Multiverse! And perhaps leave a little room on your schedule for Monarch City. They’re having a rough time.
