Welcome To the Streets

The year is 1987. A powerful conspiracy has infiltrated the governments of the west. Drug cartels rule the streets. Corporations fight for power and control. The world hangs on the brink of nuclear annihilation.

Street Wolves: Zero Hour is a tabletop role playing game where the players take the roles of Street Wolves. They live on the edge, riding the line between hero and criminal. They make their own rules and fight evil hidden in the neon shadows of yesterday.

Street Wolves features investigations, shoot outs, chases, and loads of danger.

Inspired by Miami Vice, Burn Notice, and synthwave music and art.

Powered By the Year Zero Engine

Street Wolves: Zero Hour uses the Year Zero Engine by Free League, which is found in popular Free League games such as Alien and Blade Runner. Street Wolves: Zero Hour uses the d6 pool system to keep game sessions light weight, but intense.

Also Powered By Humans

Table Cat Games is a small operation that is dedicated to putting out rad games for cool people. As part of our mission, we avoid the use of Generative AI in any form and make every effort to ensure that all aspects of the project are made my humans, including writing and art.

What You Need to Play Street Wolves: Zero Hour
When coming up with ideas for updates and posts, I keep forgetting people might discover Street Wolves: Zero Hour, but may not be all that familiar with table top role playing games. Or you might be familiar with rpgs and know they aren't all built the same!

One of the most helpful things I could think of is letting you know what you need to play Street Wolves: Zero Hour. So here we go!

1. Players

Basically, the first thing you need to play are players. Street Wolves: Zero Hour is a traditional rpg that requires a few players (usually 3 to 5).

One player is the game master or GM. They're the person that helps guide the narrative and makes rules calls like a referee. They also plays the part of non player characters.

The other players who are not the GM take the roles of the characters. They're the player characters (or PCs) that live within the world, go on adventures, and all that fun stuff.

2. The Book

The next thing you need is the Street Wolves: Zero Hour book. There will be two versions of this book. The first is the upcoming quick start which will have most of the rules and is the basic version of the game to give you an idea of what it is all about. The other is the core book which contains all the rules.

3. A Character

Each player who controls a character needs one. The quick start is going to have some pre-made characters to use. The core book will have the rules to make the characters along with a character sheet to keep track of their statistics.

4. Playing Cards

You'll need a standard deck of playing cards. You use the cards for determining who goes during combat.

5. Dice!

Who doesn't love dice?! Street Wolves: Zero Hour uses a “pool” of six sided dice. You need two sets of six sided dice that look like each other. Have at least three or four six sided dice that are a particular color or style so you can tell them apart. That's because there's your normal dice you roll and dice called stress dice that you also roll that you'll need to be able to tell them apart from each other.

100 Follower Milestone, Progress, and A New Dev Blog
Wow, we hit 100 followers! Thank you to each and every person (or cat) who has clicked on the follow button. This is one of my biggest and most ambitious projects and I'm excited that you're on board for it.

Now, onto the update!

The Zero Hour Quick Start

I've been working on Zero Hour as much as I can (with life and some upcoming conventions getting in the way).

I'm about halfway through the first pass at it. I'm laying out all the text while also creating/designing tables, sidebars, making space for art, and other graphical elements. Once I'm done with this phase, it's another round of adding art and making a bunch of adjustments. I don't know when I'll be done with it, hopefully in a couple weeks, but I'm pushing it too hard because it needs to be good and you can't rush perfection.

Though on that note, I'm viewing the Zero Hour quick start as a living document at first. I'd like others to give it a spin and send me feedback while I also get back to testing things. I'll update the quick start as the game develops. This will help me have a very solid foundation for when it's time to write the core book.

Related to all this is that I recently picked up the Alien RPG Evolved edition. I'm folding in some aspects of this version of YZE into Street Wolves. Not the scary stuff, but things like their changed terminology for types of actions and the way that armor works. There's other small things here and there, but it'll be a great fit for Street Wolves and make it a better game.

The Creation of the Zero Hour Cover

Did you want to know what it's like working with an artist to make an rpg cover? I wrote in detail about the process to make the Street Wolves: Zero Hour cover. Even if you don't find that stuff interesting, I was given permission to share the prototype mockups from artist Scrag End!

You can check it out here on my website.

A Zero Hour Campaign

One thing I don't think I've brought up before in this particular space is that I actually ran a Street Wolves: Zero Hour campaign. I took the last Street Wolves campaign Heart of Glass, which was developed for the Savage Worlds version, and ran it using the prototype Zero Hour (YZE) rules I was working on.

It took seven sessions to run and it was fantastic. Now, there's not a lot of action in Heart of Glass, it's more of a sandbox investigation where the players have to be careful or they face overwhelming force. Still, there was enough of everything for me to know I was on the right track with my YZE conversion

If you'd like to read my recaps of the campaign, you can get started on part 1 here. Be warned, it spoils everything. I also share behind the scenes stuff, plans, and alterations I made as the players progressed if you dig any of that kind of info.

Heart of Glass is likely going to be the first campaign released for Zero Hour, it perfectly fits with the themes and vibe of this version of Street Wolves. How it'll be released, I'm not sure. It may likely be a part of the Zero Hour crowd funder.

Help Spread the Word

Don't forget that If Zero Hour sounds cool to you, help spread this campaign! Tell your friends, tell your enemies, just don't keep it to yourself.

Convention Appearances!

I'll be at the following events next week, so if you're in Wisconsin for either stop by. I'd love to chat with you. I can answer any and all Street Wolves/Street Wolves: Zero Hour questions!

Midtoberfest - Milwaukee, WI - October 11

I'll have a booth at this small, local creator focused event located at the Bavarian Bierhaus in Milwaukee.  More info on Midtoberfest here.

Gamehole Con - Madison, WI - October 15-18th

The biggest ttrpg con in Wisconsin that's growing every year. I got a table in the demo row (which is usually located in the lobby). More Gamehole Con info here.

Things are Happening!
Greetings Street Wolves!

First thank you to everyone who has followed this project so far!

I know it's only been about two weeks since the last update, but things are happening and I wanted to share what was going on. Okay, on to the update:

Teaser Video

I took some of the art I have for Street Wolves, cut it up, and made a short teaser video. I used Canva, but in the future I'd like to learn better, more robust programs. Anyway, I had fun trying to capture what I want Street Wolves: Zero Hour to be in video form.

A New Development Blog Post

I thought about some of thematic aspects of Zero Hour that I'm working on and wrote a blog post about it. I cover my overal design goal of the game, setting changes that will set it apart from the Savage Worlds version (Turbo Edition), and some thoughts on a couple of factions.

You can check it out here on my website.

Crowdfunding Planning

An invisible part of this whole thing is the crowdfunding planning which includes design and creation of the crowdfunding page, setting pledge levels, deciding what to have as add-ons, and a whole lot more. I'm making my way through some of it in between working on the quick start. Hopefully I'll be able to share some more details in the near future as I work some of this stuff out.

I've been brainstorming ideas for something like an early bird bonus (either the first 24 to 48 of the campaign). If I pull the trigger on that, you're not going to want to miss the launch!

The Zero Hour Quick Start

Work on the Zero Hour quick start is progressing at a steady pace. I don't have an estimate for when it'll be ready... but I'm aiming for the next month or so. We'll see. There's a lot of stuff coming up that might delay my plans a bit.

However, it's looking great and I'm excited to get some eyes on it when it comes out. Just fyi, it'll be pay what you want when it's released. You'll be able to pay nothing if you'd like, but any money raised on the quick start helps Table Cat Games survive and pay for stuff like art and whatever other kinds of supplies we need until the crowdfunder launches.

Help Spread the Word

And a plea: If Zero Hour sounds cool to you, help spread this campaign! Tell your friends, tell your enemies, just don't keep it to yourself.

Cover Art Reveal! And Some Launch Thoughts

Thank you for all the early birds who have decided to follow along at the start! You're the real ones.

Check out the Street Wolves: Zero Hour Cover Art!

You probably already saw, because it's right up there! This art was done by Scrag End, who did the main composition for the Shadow in the Stars game I just did.

I think he knocked it out of the park, I hope you do too! It really captures the spirit and aesthetics of what I'm going for with this version of Street Wolves.

Launch Thoughts

Someone asked me what does "Coming Soon" mean when the date for launch is set for September of 2027? Well, coming soon is a relative term... but also the thing that's coming soon is the Street Wolves: Zero Hour: Quick Start version of the game, which will give you a LOT of the rules for Zero Hour to serve as a taste test. And to serve as actual testing, but more on that in the future.

September of 2027 was also a date that I picked because I had to pick something. I'd like to run it no later than that, but we'll see how things come together in the following months. I have a LOT of work to do besides continuing to write Zero Hour. There's a lot of foundation you need to lay behind the scenes for a crowdfunder!

Also, I like to get as much as I can possibly get done before I launch a crowdfunder. That way, the game comes out a lot quicker for you and I don't have a bunch of pressure on me to finish it. Pretty much a win, win for the both of us. Plus, we can't launch until we get enough pre-launch followers. I need to keep gaining followers if we have any hope of funding.

That all means, it'll be awhile before I'm able to pick an actual launch date, so best keep an eye this project as things develop!

Got Any Questions?

Feel free to ask me any questions about Street Wolves: Zero Hour development, in-universe stuff, plans, anything at all!
