Last Hope is a dark Magical Girls game, within which you play as teenage or young adult characters chosen to fight evil corruption in an alternate version of the world, while also balancing their mundane life, their struggles, and their relationships.

The city of Higanbana is full of mysteries, strange occurrences, and twisted individuals. You must protect its inhabitants from the source of the corruption and slay its Shadows before they become powerful enough to cross the veil between The Beyond and the real world.

Perhaps you'll even be able to prevent your inevitable, tragic demise.

Last Hope is based on Caltrop Core a SRD published by Titanomachy RPG, using the mighty (and deadly) triangle D4 as its primary dice. The Caltrop Core SRD was featured in Dicebreaker's "9 best tabletop RPG systems to hack into a custom game."

We recommend having at least 4 for more convenient dice rolls.

The rules can be summarized by the following: Whenever you want to accomplish an action, roll a number of D4s equal to the appropriate stat, keep the highest and compare it to the table or count how many 4s you rolled!

Last Hope takes inspiration from sources such as Puella Magi Madoka Magica, Yuuki Yuuna is a Hero, Card Captor Sakura, Persona, and Fire Emblem.

You can check out the demo version of Last Hope HERE!

You can see some test pages for the book below. Note that the the final version may vary slightly!

  • A 250+ pages, full-color rulebook with illustrations from a wide variety of artists.
  • A full description of Higanbana, including all of the hot spots, rumors, strange phenomena, and more!
  • A Corruption system that directly affects your character's health and behavior, which may lead to tragic scenes of sacrifice and heartbreak.
  • Quick to learn and easy to play.
  • 10 "Hearts" to choose from and make the character you want to play.
  • System for relationships with characters populating the world, allowing you to nurture special interests with others, and gain perks from interacting with people.
  • Simple but deep tactical combat that encourages teamwork.
  • Special items to improve your character.
  • Alternate modes of play that includes tragic battle royale and playing as working adults, idols, etc.
  • A Shadow Codex containing pre-made Tarnished, Wretched, and Anathemas.
  • A starter Investigation to learn the basics of the game.

When your character awakens as a Sentinel, their powers comes from within their heart and soul. Their upbringing and their personality determine how The Gift affects them.

The city of Higanbana is a bustling metropolis of diversity, modern architecture, technology, and strange occurrences. We have picked a diverse group of artists to represent this beautiful place, and also to populate the book with awesome characters and creepy monsters.

  • The cover and a lot of the character art will be made by Heidi Paña, a Filipina artist living in Canada with a passion for the Magical Girls genre. She always brings new and different ideas to her pieces, and we are extremely excited to have her back.  Her work includes character art for Arkelon Chronicles.
  •  James Fletcher, is a Canadian artist with deep knowledge of the Magical Girls genre, and a passion for weird monsters and folklore. He knows how to convey emotions and create unique designs using abstract concepts. We are very excited to have him back working with us. His work includes art for the Keys of Izjeria card game and illustrations for Arkelon Chronicles.
  • Virginie Juteau is a Canadian artist with an extremely versatile portfolio. She will be designing the Magical Girl mascot, Unmei. Her work includes concept art for Ubisoft, art for the Keys of Izjeria card game, and illustrations for Arkelon Chronicles.
  • Helia Santo will join us to make a beautiful, thematic character sheet, in addition to the logos for the Hearts (game classes). They worked on amazing projects such as Underisle and Overisles from Hatchling Games, and we are so excited to have them with us.
  • Saga Mackenzie will be working on Higanbana Map! She is a Queer Transgender illustrator and tabletop game designer operating out of the Highlands of Scotland, with a current focus on fantasy cartography, adventure writing and character illustration! Her work includes Night City map for R Talsorian Games's Cyberpunk Red TTRPG, and maps for Uncaged Anthology: Goddesses.
  • More to be added!
