Location/mini-adventure set in a jungle village impoverished by a xorn eating their sole trade good — raw gemstones that emerge from a nearby volcano and flow down a river to them. Encounters scaled to accommodate parties of various levels.
Your party travels a road that skirts the edge of a vast rain forest. Off in the distance, a mountain rises high above the treetops, dominating the landscape. Suddenly, they spot a group of rugged-looking humans trailing livestock and loaded pack animals approaching from within the jungle. They have the chance to conceal themselves and overhear the conversation. But even if they don’t succeed they hear just enough to find out about the village deep in the jungle that has been a lucrative source raw gemstones for these traders. However, the traders are now angry because the villagers claim they no longer have raw gems to trade. If they succeed in staying out of sight long enough to overhear the good stuff, they realize that the traders suspect the villagers of holding out on them and they are thinking of coming back with some muscle to beat the truth out of them.
Welcome to Children of the Mountain God, the 15th in our ongoing series of location modules/mini-adventures compatible with D&D 5E (Children of the Mountain God) and both editions of Pathfinder (Path to Tifala). In it, the challenge that faces your party comes down to whether or not they decide to help Tifala with its dilemma: They could just move on…. Or they can help the village figure out why the mountain god no longer provides them with gemstones and investigate what happened to the others who tried to find out what went wrong.
Eventually, your party finds that a xorn has emerged from the Plane of Earth and, as is its wont, is eating the gemstones that have been Tifala’s source of wealth. If they defeat the xorn, then find and seal off its gateway into the Material Plane, they restore the status quo and save the village. However, at the DM’s discretion, they may face one more challenge as an epilogue: The angry traders may return before the player characters take their leave, backed with armed toughs and determined to do whatever they deem necessary to get the gemstones flowing back into their hands.
Before then, however, the player characters will have the chance to participate in side quests to help the locals and gain exceptional and useful mundane items as rewards. If they stay in Tifala for the action and adventure, they can make themselves the hero of the village and walk away with some cool stuff as well.
What range of character levels are appropriate for this module?
Children of the Mountain God and Path to Tifala are not limited by player character level. Where appropriate, we provide guidance on how to scale encounters to fit the party's average level. In the case of the boss encounter with the xorn, this may require using more than one xorn in order to make it more of a challenge for higher level player characters.
As a thank-you for supporting this campaign, we are throwing open our catalogue of RPG books to you at a 15-25% discount from our normal prices. This includes our Places by the Way and Found by the Way location modules, our deep dives into random wilderness encounters (The Book of Chance Meetings for D&D 5E and Book of Hidden Paths for Pathfinder 2E), our system for critical hits and fumbles Severed Heads and Broken Blades and our most recent product, a brief guide for slotting IRL diseases into D&D and Pathfinder, The Book of Plagues.
As our product lines build out, it’s getting a little cumbersome to list everything as an individual item on for purposes of creating campaign add-ons. To that end, we’re going to try organizing things a little differently to rein in sprawl: We’re up to 14 each in the Places by the Way and Found by the Way series. Instead of listing each variant to each module as a different item, we’re listing Places by the Way PDF, Places by the Way softcover, Found by the Way PDF and Found by the Way softcover as different items and you’ll be able to pick which titles you want as variations at the pledge manager stage. Whichever quantity you choose, that’s how many variations you should be able to choose in the pledge manager. If this doesn’t work, let us know and we’ll fix it.
We plan to have both Children and the Mountain God and Path to Tifala ready for layout by the end of May, and ready to go the printer sometime in July. Our target ship date is end of July or sometime in August but we will accelerate this if possible. We'll see how it goes.
We will ship all of your physical items together as soon as they are all ready, to save on shipping. For orders shipped within the US, we will use USPS Media Mail. For order shipped outside the US, we will use either USPS or UPS, whichever is less expensive to us (surprisingly, this is often UPS).
For PDF items, we will either send you a download link from DriveThru RPG or we will send you an email with the file(s) attached. Or some combination of the two.
We're thrilled to be part of the Tabletop Tavern group in this year's Pocketopia! Back 3 or more projects in our little cabal and you'll get a bonus item from each creator you support! We're kicking a free PDF copy of Tome of the Utility Drawer, a collection of new mundane and magic items from the first 8 Places by the Way and Found by the Way modules.
If you're not familiar with our Places by the Way and Found by the Way location modules, you can find out more about them on the Ramen Sandwich Press website. As has been my custom lately, I finished writing the manuscript of Children of the Mountain God, so it is already in layout. While the campaign is running, I'll work on converting it to Pathfinder with the intention of having Path to Tifala ready for layout by the time it ends.
If you want to catch up with either Places by the Way or Found by the Way (or both series at once), the add-ons allow you to pick up modules (and other books from our catalogue) at a bit of a discount to our retail price (in the case of the print copies, you get free domestic shipping).
Thank you for your interest!
