Meet the Devious Swindler
Funding Goal: $1,300,000
We did it!
This project reached this goal!
We just blew through $1.3M, and we're feeling pretty lucky about what great fans we have.

“A cheater, but a charming one”
The Devious Swindler came into being early in the design process. We looked at elements of the game that were underused. In this case, the haggle die. At a high level, the Swindler wants to leverage the randomness of the game so we also designed them to use the market and treasure decks to craft high-risk/high-reward hero.

Who will like this character: People who like big moments and aren’t bothered by luck.

“You can’t control everything. Sometimes you’ve just got to roll the dice.”
The Swindler’s banner ability is to roll the haggle die and gain the result. Half the time you get something. That’s what you get for gambling.

The Inventive virtue lets you gain the advantages from treasures in the market. This virtue doesn’t count conditional advantages (so nothing from scrolls) but the ceiling is still high. If there are three undead advantages in the market, then you’re going to put a lot of hurt on Oreks.

The Joyful virtue is all upside - ignoring the closed on the haggle die when reinforcing. There’s no reason not to haggle every turn. You won’t always get something, but you’ll never get punished for using it.

“Good luck beats early rising”
The Swindler’s other virtues let you mitigate luck. If the haggle die isn’t going your way, get Fortuitous. It gives you a reroll of the haggle die each time you roll it and lets you choose which result to keep.

If you’re getting harried by foes, take Calculating, which lets you ignore all warrior and spirit losses from critical hit battle cards. This combos with several different new mechanics in Covenant, or some companions from Alliances. You might be hoping for this crits.

Finally, you can take Opportunistic, which gives you a blessing every time a player buys a treasure from the market (blessings are a short-term +1 Wild Advantage). Sometimes those treasure just can’t stay in the market. Opportunistic lets you generate value from other players’ actions.

An observation .... The Character card for the Devious Swindler shows a female but the miniature seems to be a male. I think it would obviously better to have the miniature match the Character Card. This also seemed to be the same on the Relentless Warden .... maybe it's just the sundrop on the minis that is creating that affect. At any rate the Swindler mini definitely has a mustache

Yes, I totally agree.

Plus, having more female characters gives the male to female ratio a better balance.

why does the miniature look angry? The artwork makes him look cocky. If he is devious, then he should not look angry. It would be better if the orange ring were a more vibrant orange

My wife HATES the haggle die and it seems to hate her as well. I think she will ADORE this character because she will feel like she's finally in control of it.

All this is cool but without the expanding of the competitive play, without the addition of the Activate Tower button I've decided to cancel my pledge. If the game's sole focus is on joint play well.. it's not like the old game and just not for me. Best of luck in your endeavors! You guys do put out a solid product and I thank you for the original release.

I have played RtDT numerous times with different pairings of people in my gaming group and never once have they wanted to play competitive mode. They all know it exists because I ask if they want competitive or co-op and they always choose co-op. I do own the old 80s version, so the point of complaining about the new version not being like the old version is like complaining about Pong not being available on the latest consoles.

This was an amazingly fun character in testing. I really enjoyed all of the new characters and how different they all felt.

Oh. I supposed it’s been tested a thousand times. But I fear that this character could be too powerful. It’s not a high-risk/high-reward, but only abolishing risks.

I see waht you mean, but I believe it's a more swingy character. If you get brutal lucky, and all aof you rolls give you something you will be powerful, on the other hand you can get unlucky with her (him?). 1. All other caharcetrs banner is a straight forward, where you get something every round. The swindler gets (statisticly) every other round nothing. Even with reroll virtue, you will 25% chance getting nothing for banner. 2. The calculating virtue sounds also good, but only if you draw thise crits. In my last game I fighted6 foes + adversary and I did not draw any crits. 3. Inventive is also incidental. In most cases you will get 1 plus advantage from it, sometimes 2, but 3 advantages will be very rare. I don't see it overpowered, and the desing aspects are clearly visible. I will play this charachter, because she is so piraty looking. :) It won't be my faveouirte charachter, but I can clearly see some people in my gaming group who will love her.

I never thought double haggling was too broken. My gf always comboed the Spymaster double reinforce virtue with the Necklace of Haggling and it never broke the game.

Can I use the Fortuitous virtue by the banner action too? (I would say yes.)
