The Dark Deck

This deck (112 cards) is a practical tool for dungeon exploration in Shadowdark.

Its purpose is to help the dungeon stay active: to create pressure, danger, discovery, and hard choices quickly, without slowing the table down. The deck adds fast, usable pressure to exploration. Some cards make the environment more dangerous. Some introduce creatures, patrols, rituals, or signs of active life below ground. Others offer useful objects and relics that can help the party survive, but never for free.

How To Use It

The deck is divided into six families, each focused on a different part of dungeon play.

  • Ruins & Ancient Mechanisms
  • Dungeon Predators 
  • Patrols & Factions 
  • Forbidden Objects

Draw from the deck whenever the dungeon needs to answer the party: when they enter a new area, make noise, linger too long, search recklessly, trigger danger, or when the pace needs pressure. 

Danger Levels

The deck uses four danger tiers.

  • Easy 
  • Normal 
  • Hard
  • Extreme

This spread helps the deck stay tense without making every draw catastrophic. The point is escalation, not chaos.

Visual Language

The deck is also built to be easy to read at a glance. Each card type is identified by a clear main icon, so the GM can immediately tell whether the draw represents. This makes the cards quicker to parse in play and easier to organize mentally.

The characters find themselves in the heart of a dungeon, having just reached the treasure chamber… but their triumph soon reveals itself as a trap, orchestrated by a being from beyond this world — an entity that challenges them to escape alive before the cursed torches burn out.

This is not an adventure of leisurely exploration or careful strategy. It’s a desperate race against time, where every choice matters, resources are scarce, and failure means not merely death… but eternal damnation.
