Project Update: News from the Nightmare Abyss! / Novità dal baratro dell'incubo!
[ENG] Hello, nightmare explorers!
With this update, we want to share a few updates on the work currently underway for VHS: Rule of Three.
- Writing continues, with Delirium nearing completion while work moves forward in parallel on Fleshbound and Soulbane.
- The Puzzle Relic Dice have officially gone into production and will be manufactured by our trusted partner (and one of the biggest names in dice production) Q-Workshop.
- VHS: Return of the Living Dead and the VCR are also in production and are expected to reach us in early November.
As I often do with these updates, though, I’d like to go beyond simply telling you where production stands and spend a few lines showing you HOW we actually bring these projects to life.
BEHIND THE HORROR
Writing VHS has always been incredibly fun for me, and four years after the release of the first series, that hasn’t changed. If anything, I feel even more creatively invested every time I get to dive back into the darkest corners of fear for a new project.
And I’m not just talking about writing the story of a Monster or a Character. There’s everything that comes before that: research, reference gathering (which often means consuming an unhealthy amount of horror) reading books and essays on the subject and, last but definitely not least, going back through the entire history of VHS.
That last part may actually be the most delicate, because VHS isn’t simply a collection of horror stories. It’s an anthology in which Characters, places, and historical periods are carefully interconnected. That allows me to keep the setting consistent not only narratively, but chronologically as well.
Some of you (especially those who have read Of Monsters and Killers, the lore book included in Spin-off) may already have noticed how recurring elements of Very Horror Stories weave into one another, creating a nightmare whose roots stretch all the way back to the birth of the universe itself.
Nothing, from the Sets your Characters move through to character sheets and even the smallest references, is ever entirely accidental. But keeping such a large story alive and allowing it to keep growing takes time. That’s why there are many preparatory steps before the actual writing begins, (although personally, I consider those part of the writing process too).
A NEW JOURNEY INTO THE NIGHTMARE
Speaking of connections, we recently released Of Monsters and Killers 2 on DriveThruRPG, diving even deeper into the stories of the Characters, Monsters, and locations from VHS Series 2 and the Horrorfest expansion.
This volume really lets you see, laid out in black and white, all the connections linking not only the horrors of this universe, but also the people trying to fight them.
HOW A VHS COMES TO LIFE
Once the research is done and the lore has been pieced together, it’s time to work on the rules. Starting with Series 2, every VHS introduces new mechanics closely tied to the mood of that particular box. Writing the rules helps me immerse myself in its atmosphere and blend the mechanics with the kind of experience I want players to feel at the table.
Once that framework is in place and refined, we move on to the Main Sets. Here, the challenge is to connect WHAT I want to tell with WHERE I want to tell it: choosing the places where certain emotions should emerge. It isn’t simply about putting maps together, but giving each one its own story (interconnected, as always) that players can absorb, even passively, during a session.
After the maps come the building blocks for what I personally find the most fun to write: Characters and Monsters. That means creating all the new Traits, unique items, and Special Abilities alongside each subject’s background.
Once we have the mood, the rules, the setting, and the protagonists, it’s time to bring everything together and create what will REALLY pull you inside the VHS.
Of course, the Films.
This is also one of the most delicate and useful stages of development, because it’s where potential problems start surfacing, especially during playtesting: small rules inconsistencies, elements that need adjusting, or balance issues. Maybe a Monster turns out to be nearly impossible to defeat, or a Set becomes far too punishing to navigate.
Once the Films are complete, it’s time for the finishing touches: everything players need to fully step into the mood of that VHS: writing advice, roleplaying guidance, tips for the Game Master, and more.
A LEAK FROM THE BLACK ARCHIVE
That, in very simplified terms, is what goes into creating a VHS. Or at least one of the first parts of the process, because translators, proofreaders, and artists are all working at the same time.
And speaking of artists, before I go, I want to leave you with one last little treat straight from the Black Archive art department. It seems a few cards may have slipped out.
Luckily, it’s only a small selection, because as I write this, plenty more are being created; and it would be a real shame if those happened to slip out too.
At least for now.
As always, if you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us here or at [email protected].
Thank you for reading, nightmare wanderers, and have a great day!

[ITA] Buongiorno a tutti e a tutte, esploratori dell'incubo!
