Project Update: The Rule of Three Is Written! / Rule of Three: scrittura terminata!
[ENG] Hello, nightmare explorers!
We're back with another update on the progress of VHS: Rule of Three, and this time we have some particularly exciting news to share with you: we've officially finished writing all three VHS!
From Delirium to Fleshbound and Soulbane, every single element is now complete: from the new rules and Films to Character and Monster backgrounds, all the new Traits, and Special Abilities. All the artwork is finished as well, which means we can finally focus on the last stages of the editorial process.
The English version is currently undergoing proofreading, and once that's done, we'll move on to layout. If everything goes according to plan, we expect to send you the digital files sometime in November!
In the meantime, as always, I'd like to take this opportunity to give you another behind-the-scenes look at the making of this new trilogy of nightmares.
THREE NEW FLAVORS OF HORROR
In our last update, I walked you through how a VHS comes to life, covering the different stages of the writing process. Now that we've finished this new trilogy, I'd like to share a few thoughts on the experience, because each of the three VHS presented a very different challenge.
Delirium was undoubtedly the hardest to write. The biggest challenge was bringing psychological horror into a system like VHS, where exploration plays such a central role, and, more importantly, finding a way to make players actually feel that kind of horror.
A lot of the work came down to subtle details in the writing and the backgrounds of Characters and Monsters, whose stories intertwine to form a much bigger picture. Setting almost the entire VHS in Misty Pines, Washington, also played an important part in achieving this. Creating a relatively self-contained world allowed me to convey that sense of alienation that lies at the heart of this particular experience.
Fleshbound, on the other hand, was the most disturbing. When dealing with flesh, you inevitably enter a territory that's almost as intimate as the human mind. Throughout the writing process, the feeling that stayed with me the most was one of intrusion, in the most physical sense of the word: something that invades, alters, and transforms what we are.
The story of the Monster known as "The Pig," in particular, turned out to be one of the most complex and brutal I've written, though not in a gratuitous or purely gory sense. It's a kind of brutality that goes much deeper, affecting both flesh and mind.
Writing Fleshbound also gave me the chance to explore different forms of contamination and mutation, ranging from atmospheres reminiscent of Resident Evil (when it comes to chemical contamination) to the more demonic and hellish horrors of Hellraiser.
Soulbane, finally, was by far the most fun to write. It took me back to when I first started playing tabletop RPGs with Dungeons & Dragons 3.5, giving me the chance to revisit a kind of fantasy setting I've always had a soft spot for. I also couldn't resist sneaking in a few references to one of my favorite video games, Medievil (reimagined through the lens of VHS, of course), and naturally to Army of Darkness, which remains one of Soulbane's biggest inspirations.
In fact, I have to admit that writing this VHS made me want to create an entire horror series dedicated to this kind of setting!
THREE NIGHTMARISH LOCATIONS
And to wrap things up, I've picked three Main Sets (as always, illustrated by Fabio Porfidia, the artist behind ALL the maps in VHS) I'd like to give you a closer look at: one from each VHS, featuring some of the locations whose Films I had the most fun writing (or found the most unsettling).
DELIRIUM – WIDOW'S POINT LIGHTHOUSE
A rather unsettling place where the victims of serial killer Eduard "Edik" Gazin were discovered. It's also partly inspired by the video game The Lighthouse. I'd rather not say too much more, but I can assure you that Widow's Point has quite a few stories to tell.
FLESHBOUND – THE HOUSE OF PIGS
I'm not going to spoil a single thing about this one. The Film set here is one of my personal favorites, and I'd really like you to experience all its nuances for yourselves, without me ruining any of the surprises.
SOULBANE – THE CURSED VILLAGE
Those familiar with Medievil will probably notice a few similarities to the Sleeping Village, which served as inspiration for this Set. Fair warning, though: the two Films set here are a far cry from the quirky, lighthearted humor that makes the video game so memorable!
That's all for now! As always, we'll keep you updated on the next stages of development and, of course, on the release of the digital files.
If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to us here or at [email protected].
Thank you for reading, nightmare wanderers, and have a great day!

[ITA] Buongiorno a tutti e a tutte, esploratori dell'incubo!
È inoltre in parte ispirato al videogioco The Lighthouse.
- Simone
