About the Raptors

With their hooked beaks, sharp talons, and keen eyesight, birds of prey are awe-inspiring to casual and expert birders alike. As an avid birder, I wanted to showcase what I thought are the representative raptors that I share a home with in the Midwest. We have so many species, so I decided to pick 6 birds in different families. Many of these have a wide range, so they may be familiar to you even if you're outside the Midwest!

Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus): The national emblem of the United States. Bald Eagles were once endangered by DDT and poaching, but they successfully rebounded thanks to conservation efforts. Bald Eagles mainly eat fish, and often steal from other raptors such as the Osprey.

Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus): One of the most common owls of North America, Great Horned Owls can take down large prey, like other raptors, but also feed on small mammals, reptiles, and amphibians.

Osprey (
Pandion haliaetus): Ospreys are expert fishers, and they have the adaptations to show it. Their slit-shaped nostrils can close, allowing them to dive underwater. They can rotate their outer toe backwards in order to get a better grip on slippery fish, and their huge talons and foot spines known as spicules help with traction.

Peregrine Falcon (
Falco peregrinus): Peregrine Falcons are considered the fastest animal on earth, as they can reach speeds of 200 miles per hour during their vertical dives known as stoops. It is one of the most widespread birds in the world, but they were almost extinct in parts of the US due to DDT usage. Their populations now flourish thanks to conservation and reintroduction efforts.

Red-tailed Hawk (
Buteo jamaicensis): One of the largest and most common hawks of North America. Most movies and TV shows use a Red-tailed Hawk's call for any raptor, so some may be surprised to hear the real call of a Bald Eagle.

Turkey Vulture (
Cathartes aura): As a scavenger, Turkey Vultures play a vital role in the ecosystem. They can digest almost anything, even deadly pathogens. As a defense mechanism, they vomit on humans or other animals that get too close.

Shipping and Fulfillment (US and Canada only)

This campaign is US and Canada only. I'm a very small business and can only ship to the US and Canada for now!

If this campaign funds, you will receive a survey after it ends to choose your cards and make any changes to your order. Once I have all of those, I will put in the printing order. It will take 10-21 business days to have everything printed and shipped to me. Once I receive them, I will package all the orders, which I estimate will take a week depending on my schedule. Sticker-only orders that include fewer than 20 stickers will be mailed out via USPS First Class Mail with no tracking. Cards, 20+ sticker orders, and combined orders will be shipped by USPS Ground Advantage with tracking, or First Class Package International for Canadian backers. I estimate delivery will be in September 2026.

Shipping and handling and sales taxes will be charged in the pledge manager before fulfillment. For US backers, I estimate the shipping cost for USPS First Class Mail will be $1-2, and USPS Ground Advantage will be $6-10. For Canadian backers, I estimate shipping cost for USPS First Class Mail will be $2.65-6 and USPS Ground Advantage will be $20.

Other things you should know:

Communication:
I will send out updates on the project page about when the cards and stickers are in production and when they’re ready to ship, or anything else backers may need to know.

Refunds:
I will grant full refunds for pledges within 30 days of the campaign's end date, no questions asked. After that, I cannot grant refunds and if you choose not to fill out your survey or pay shipping and tax on time, your pledged amount will be considered a donation toward the project.

Dates and deadlines will be made clear through campaign updates, and reminders will be sent on a regular basis throughout the post-campaign timeline to remind backers who haven't yet completed their surveys.

Fulfillment:
I estimate the rewards will be ready to ship by September 2026. The estimated delivery time is 1-5 business days, and 1-4 weeks for international packages.

Once fulfillment has begun, all remaining backers who have not yet filled out their surveys will have 30 days to complete and submit their surveys to receive their rewards. After that, any backers who have still not filled out their surveys and paid their shipping and taxes will have their pledges for physical items considered a donation toward the project.

Damaged or Missing Items, and Lost or Misdelivered Packages:
You have 30 days after your package arrives to report to [email protected] any needed replacement items for damaged or missing items in your order. If your order was damaged, you must include pictures of the damaged products and packaging. For packages that go missing, you have 45 days to report it after the item is sent to have me resend or follow up on the items. Packages that are sent to an incorrect address as a result of an error in your entry will require you to pay for shipping the new package. You will be notified before addresses are locked and will have a chance to update your address until just before fulfillment begins. If your address changes, be sure to update your address in your survey.

Backers are responsible for providing correct and up-to-date email addresses on BackerKit, and for reading updates as they are made to keep informed about this information and the deadline dates. It is the backer's responsibility to follow up on their packages should problems arise.
