Well we did it, overtime continues! Today we’ll tackle another common question, with perhaps an uncommon, yet predictable, twist? Early in Brandon’s career (is it fair to call it early? It still feels like it was only a year or two ago…) he became known as the Magic System Guy, and for good reason. Every release had a whole new magic system, including his shorter works. Elantris focused on AonDor with glimpses of ChayShan and Dakhor. The Final Empire showcased Allomancy, Well of Ascension had Feruchemy, and Hero of Ages had Hemalurgy. Warbreaker brought us Awakening, and Way of Kings gave us Surgebinding, composed of 10 different surges, and the fabrials. Alloy of Law featured the new idea of combining the Metallic Arts in exciting ways, and Emperor’s Soul showcased Stamping with hints of Bloodsealing. Brandon’s non-cosmere brought Rithmatics, Smedry Talents, and Lancing, saying nothing of the superhero powers in the Reckoners series or whatever it is Stephen Leeds has in Legion. As Brandon began to publish more sequels, and his focus heavily shifted towards Stormlight Archive, we began to get less new magic systems. More recently, the Skyward series has provided Cytonics, the White Sand graphic novels provided us with a published form of Sand Mastery, and the continuation of the Stormlight Archive has provided more depth to Surgebinding as well as Voidbinding and the Old Magic. Finally the Year of Sanderson gave us Spores and Sprouting, Hijo and Hion insofar as they can be considered magic, and Sunhearts and the Charred. Daily Discussion Overtime Day 1 Which of Brandon’s many magic systems is your favorite? Try to remain spoiler free, and if you’re going to pick Surgebinding clarify which surges are your favorite! Also, if you gained access to it, what’s a creative way you’d use it in your everyday life? I will always have a soft spot for Awakening, because I think the Heightenings are so flipping cool. I also really like AonDor for being Brandon’s take on traditional spell casting, however if I had to pick an ultimate favorite I’d probably go with Feruchemy. The idea of small, consistent negatives to later get a burst of positive is right up my alley. I’d use Feruchemy to go to sleep every night. I usually take an hour to fall asleep, so being able to store wakefulness would be fantastic. Plus, as a night owl, using that stored wakefulness in the mornings is an added perk!
