The next great campaign from the team that brought you the Words of Radiance Leatherbound, Isles of the Emberdark, and the record-breaking Year of Sanderson!
Welcome to the Hoid’s Storybook Collection! I’m so glad you’re here. The inception of this campaign came when I wrote the story of “The Dog and the Dragon” for Rhythm of War. People had been asking me if they could get a picture book version of the “Wandersail” story from The Way of Kings and “The Girl Who Looked Up” from Oathbringer—but I’d been hesitant, as those stories felt like they were for different audiences. With “The Dog and the Dragon,” it clicked for me that what I was writing weren’t quite picture books, and weren’t quite graphic novels, but fables. And they were for everyone.
We’ve chosen to make the presentation of each of these books individual to the given story. Some (like Wandersail) are luxurious, graphic depictions intended to be the perfect collection piece for a Stormlight enthusiast. Others (like The Dog and the Dragon) have been designed to evoke a classic children’s book, to be read to those who are younger.
However, at their core, these are stories Hoid chose to tell to provoke questions in the listener, regardless of their age. I am so proud of how they turned out, and grateful for the work of the artists over the many years it took to put this project together. (And so excited to add The ChasmFriends Get a Pet to the mix, for those who have been asking for a fully illustrated version of that.)
Also, please don’t forget The Fires of December! If picture books aren’t your thing, you can get your dose of Hoid through this novel, which has quickly become one of the books that make me the most proud. Either way, thank you. Hoid is not me, but I do often feel I’m writing from the heart when I’m using his voice.
Please enjoy where he decided to take us in these tales.
Some of Hoid’s favorite stories are coming to life in a brand new way. With art from master Lightweavers and stories expanded from their debuts in the Stormlight Archive and Story Deck®, these picture books put the magic of our worldhopping storyteller on full display. These are books to share and treasure—read them aloud until you know them by heart, and let the illustrations bring your favorite worlds home.
Each of the picture books will have gold foiling on the covers (as shown above), which are exclusive to the campaign. Only Backers will receive these foiled editions, so don't wait to grab yours!
The Dog and the Dragon
Art by Howard Lyon
This bright and colorful book tells Hoid’s story of a dog who decides to become a dragon. Hint: That’s impossible. A dog can’t become a dragon. Highly recommended if you love fluffy, scruffy pals or stories about growth and acceptance.
Wandersail
Art by Steve Argyle
“The purpose of a storyteller is not to tell you how to think, but to give you questions to think upon. Too often, we forget that.” Hoid shared this story with Kaladin at their first chance encounter on the Shattered Planes. This illustrated retelling includes Wit, the Bridgeman, and Derethil’s story of responsibility at the edge of the world.
The Girl Who Looked Up
Art by Alexis and Justin Hernandez
Before storms, before memories, and before legends, there was a girl. Shallan first told this Rosharan folk story, but when she needed to hear it, Hoid brought his signature storytelling magic to the tale. This is a story about a girl curious enough to ask questions and brave enough to seek the answers, expanded by Brandon Sanderson from its appearances in the Stormlight Archive.
The ChasmFriends Get a Pet
Art by Anna Earley
These beloved characters from the Story Deck® at Dragonsteel Nexus 2024 are right at home between the covers of their very own picture book. Join the ChasmFriends as they frolic around the Crackity Plains with their favorite shoutie.
The PDF ebooks of Hoid’s Storybook Collection will be distributed as downloadable files through BackerKit in PDF format. The picture books will not be available as audiobooks.
Hoid’s Travails—the series including Tress of the Emerald Sea and Yumi and the Nightmare Painter—chronicles the Worldsinger’s adventures on the unlikely worlds of the Cosmere. The series expands with The Fires of December, revealed at Dragonsteel Nexus in 2025.
In the exciting third entry, Hoid has quite the tale to share: In a forgotten land sustained by colorful rivers of demon blood, a young woman named December learns a devastating plague is on its way. But who will believe her? Against impossible odds, she sets sail up the River Violet to warn the king’s court, determination—and wisdom beyond her years—burning in her eyes.
The Fires of December is an epic fantasy that will appeal to a wide range of fans. The Cosmere connections make it a treat for veterans, but December’s story is also a perfect introduction to Brandon’s fantasy universe. Naturally, Hoid named the series after himself. The book, however, belongs to the remarkable woman he meets.
Narrated by Michael Kramer, the audiobook of The Fires of December will be available via m4b and mp3 format which will be distributed by BackerKit as downloadable files.
