Outright denied: I was sure Wit had something to do with that first chasmfiend attacking early in Way of Kings. It made so little sense otherwise, and ended up setting so many different things in motion. Without it, how would Elhokar have managed to show off his cut saddle? How would Dalinar have shown off his abilities just when Adolin needed to be inspired by him? And it seemed so conspicuous that Wit came galloping up from some unknown task just before it happened.
But, I asked Brandon this once at JordanCon and he just outright said, nope, total random chance.
As for my favorite overall theory... allomantic copper. I have a ton of thought about how that works. We see so many mistborn that specialize in pairs of metals. Vin and Kelsier are incredibly complex with their Pushes and Pulls. Shan Elariel was nearly as good an emotional manipulator as Breeze, utilizing both metals. Even before he became a mistborn, when Spook just had tin and pewter, he philosophized on how they felt like complementary powers, the pewter easing the pain of his enhanced senses.
Yet, bronze and copper seem an odd pair. When using copper, you can't use bronze. So where is the benefit? When Vin burns copper consciously for the first time, she notes that it makes her feel a slight buzzing in her chest. Here's my wild theory:
I think that an allomancer burning copper can focus on that buzz in their chest and modulate it. I think it's actually broadcasting something; that's what makes the big coppercloud, the area a Smoker protects. I think that those are all copperpulses, except that the default is just to send out one loud monotonous tone. But, I don't think that's the only option. I think a Smoker can change their copperpulses and emit whatever frequency they wish. Now, the question is, what good would this do? Let's look at Rhythm of War. (I had this idea long before that book came out but anti-Investiture poured gasoline right on this fire.) They explain that Investiture can work on the principle of destructive interference; if you match an Investiture with its exact opposite waveform, they will cancel each other out. Now, a very dramatic example of this is outright Anti-Investiture, which reacts like matter and anti-matter, but I propose that much like real life there are less drastic applications of this principle.
And here's where being a mistborn specializing in these two metals comes in. Because, a misting could never do this. A bronze misting can sense the bronzepulses of other Investitures but has no way to generate copperpulses in opposition, wile a copper misting could make such copperpulses but has no means of experiencing the initial bronzepulse in order to form the exact opposing waveform. Especially since such waveforms appear to be at minimum fourth-dimensional.
So yeah. That's what I think. I think a mistborn would be able to sense the waveform of different Investitures using bronze, and then fire off copperpulses that would interfere.
Now, what exactly does that mean? This isn't anti-Investiture, I'm not saying it could snuff the stormlight out of a sphere or destroy Breaths or push back Nightblood or anything. It gets into kinetic/static Investiture. Basically, I think it can make it harder for an Investiture to initiate. So if you get someone just as they're Commanding something, it will make the Awakening harder. Either it will take more Breaths to overcome, or perhaps it will just act like a failed Command, and take the Breaths but not do anything. I think if you time it right, you could stop a Windrunner from Lashing someone, but once that person is Lashed, you can't cancel it. As an Elantrian is drawing an Aon, it could perhaps make it collapse like it was drawn incorrectly, but if an Elantrian has completed an Aon with the instructions "create a column of blue fire for one hour" it couldn't undo that.
And of course, this would be VERY difficult. Before you could mess with an Elantrian writing out an Aonic equation, you'd have to spend an incredible amount of time first observing them with bronze until you have memorizind what aonic bronzepulses sense like, and then mentally invert something that doesn't fit normal 3-dimensional topography, and generate the resultant waveform. It would be for only the most expert of allomancers. Prolly there would be levels, like there's a certain base pattern for all AonDor and generating that would make it a little bit harder, but if you scan the Elantrian as they're doing it and pick up the specific and exact pattern of that particular equation, your copperpulses would be far more effective a counter-measure.
Anyway. That's it, that's my chullscat crazy, aluminum-hat theory. A mistborn can mess with other people trying to do arcana.

Dang! I really enjoyed reading that and holy cow you are for sure on another level of theorizing than I am!

@Willshaper Would you say that mistborns are the most powerful in the cosmere with their magic system? How would you rank them amongst Rosharans?

@Willshaper - I really like this theory and was thinking about radio or other over-distance communication, but you went a totally different (and probably more sensical) direction.

Hrm... depends, kinda, on what you mean by "most powerful"? Honestly I think they're very much on the low end of the scale. Elantrians can do pretty much anything, and per Design in Yumi, they're up there as far as, crazy Invested to the hilt. And now we know they have no distance limit on their powers, they just draw a local map on the ground and now they have free infinite power anywhere forever. And even what should be their other limitation, that it takes a long time to draw out a complex Aonic equation, seems to be out the window. On the basis of barely any practice, Raoden was drawing perfect Aons with both hands simultaneously, almost instantly, and the people who've been doing it longer seem to be even faster. So it's hard to imagine someone being more powerful than an Elantrian. Compared to a surgebinder or Knight Radiant... that would be interesting. Lots of various advantages on both sides, so a lot of context goes into saying who could exploit the situation better. A mistborn has access to the full suite of powers and that can be very useful, and as a culture specifically focused on metal, and with hundreds of years more experience with the powers (whether we're talking Era 1 when mistborn actually exist or if somehow there were a mistborn concurrent with the timeframe of the Stormlight Archive), if they were fully prepared there are a lot of things they might think of that a surgebinder might not. Like, using aluminum as a way to block surgebinding. Keep extra vials in an aluminum pouch to prevent an Elsecaller from turning it into poison, etc. And, of course, there are a lot of "meta-magics" available to a mistborn we've barely seen. let alone delved into. Chromium is obvious. Burn aluminum if a Skybreaker tries to Lash you. Would tin or bronze help someone determine if something is an illusion? And if my idea of copper works, that could be extremely useful. It would depend on a LOT of factors. Among other things, Bondsmiths can just do anything "because Connection" so they would likely win. But for most of the other orders? There will obviously be excepting circumstances, but generally I'd give it to a mistborn.
