What Even is a Cryptid?!
SHIVER is our easy to learn scary movie roleplaying game - so creative monsters are really in our wheelhouse!
We've wanted to do this SHIVER: Cryptids expansion for years, and we're excited to bring you not only stand alone adventures, but the tools to conjure up the monster-road-trip of your own dreams, right at your tabletop.
Our writers, Charlie and Adam, are huge cryptozoological enthusiasts, but what about the rest of us who don't know their Mothman from their Bigfoot? Their Chupacabra from their Flatwoods Monster?
And what even is the Loveland Frogman?
Here's the real test... do you know your Mothman from your Bigfoot?
What is a "Cryptid"? Put simply, a Cryptid is a legendary or unproven animal - something that you've heard tale of, maybe even seen taxidermy recreations of, but likely never seen in person (definitely not at your local zoo).
Things like Bigfoot or the Abominable Snowman / Yeti, the Loch Ness Monster, or the Jersey Devil - all cryptids. But it doesn't stop there...
Cryptids Right at Home Lots of countries have their own legendary animals galore, and some even share cryptids. The Chupacabra, for instance, actually can't decide if it lives in the USA, South America, or India - must be nice to be so well travelled!
Here in the UK, Yorkshire has giant black cats and dogs of legend, Lancashire has Jenny Greenteeth the river hag, and Cornwall even has its very own Owlman! (Though not to be confused with the Owlman of SHIVER: Slasher fame...)
Are Cryptids Real? Some real world animals were actually once considered cryptids! The Okapi, the Komodo Dragon, and the humble Giant Squid were all once considered cryptids by the scientific community, until they found their irrefutable evidence. Then they pretended they knew all along - classic scientist behaviour!
What's that over there? Hiding in the bushes? Is that - A RACCOON?!
We're busy here at Parable Games trying to gather up only the finest evidence of legendary beasts and monster around for you! Only the grainiest and blurriest of photos and most vague of eyewitness reports will do!
Wouldn't you know it though, one cryptid came straight to us this week - no effort needed! Through the wonders of the internet we've been introduced to the one and only Jimothy.
While we ramp up the train towards full SHIVER: Cryptids speed (it's like a ghost train, but more furry and mysterious. Choo-Choo Cryptids!), here's a little wonderful guy to take to your table as a friend - and all around gentleman of the hedge.
Jimothy's statblock is compatible with the SHIVER RPG, which means he's ready to play on your table today. Charlie also added some fun potential plot hooks for you to jump right in with everyone's favourite raccoon*.
We don't really follow trends here at Parable Games, but anyone who has met Adam and Charlie at conventions knows how they feel about fun and quirky little animal friends. Be kind to local wildlife!
