Project Update: What happens When You Roll?

 Good Evening, Immortals.

After all the excitement of last week it’s nice to have a week of calm to reflect, especially as we settle into the longer nights of autumn.

We’ll start this week’s post off with the reminders:

Gamehole Con is in Madison, WI and we’re having special First Look play sessions of Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe TTRPG. If you want to sign up (or tell someone else to sign up and report back) then purchase your tickets to the First Look Events here 🎲

Now that it’s October the countdown to launch has begun and that means that the clock is ticking on the Lestat Calling Card VIP pre-pledge offer. These cards won’t be available as part of the campaign so if you want one now is the time.
 You can Pre-Pledge here 🎩

If you didn’t catch the interview during Renegade Con you can watch the chat Good Morning Society had with producer Rachel J. Wilkinson you can catch it as part of the larger Renegade Con stream here 🗯.
That link will take you to the start of the interview and we also plan on uploading the video on its own so it’ll be up on our YouTube channel soon.

Last reminder is our weekly discussion post- this week’s episode is A Vile Hunger for Your Hammering Heart and it marks the halfway point of our Season 1 rewatch (since we watched episodes 1 & 2 in the same week)!
Join the discussion here ♥.

Want another preview of game mechanics? Then just read on!

In the past couple of weeks we’ve touched on the dice rolls in Anne Rice’s Immortal Universe TTRPG, but we haven’t discussed the results. When we talked about tests in our update about rolls in the game towards the end there was a mention of escalation.

What is escalation?

This is a mechanic that brings a little bit more realistic conflict to the game. When rolling dice and facing the test you’re attempting to accomplish an action, but it’s not always so simple as ‘you rolled well so you can do the action’.

It is possible to put a little too much English on the ball, so to speak.

After all of your adjustments and re-rolls your roll will land in one of four states:
Natural Success: Get the required number of hits without the use of rerolls or adjustments.

Controlled Success: Get the required number of hits with the use of rerolls or adjustments.

Chaotic Success: Get more hits than the target, despite the use of rerolls and adjustments. You succeed at the task but also gain an escalation.

Failure: Get fewer hits than the target, despite the use of rerolls and adjustments. You fail the task and gain an escalation with a tier equal to the hits under the target.

Escalations are the uncontrolled results of a test. Failure inherently carries escalations, but a chaotic success (rolling too many hits) can be just as dangerous.

Escalations are earned in tiers, depending on how many hits you rolled over or under the target. Tier 1 for 1 hit over or under the target, tier 2 for 2 hits, and so on.

A small escalation could be as simple as breaking a useful tool or attracting some odd looks, you succeed but there’s a minor cost or suffer a minor setback with a failure. However, you can also have a higher tier escalation.

For example, if you attempt to enter a party under a false identity and earn a tier 3 escalation, you will be granted entry, but the person whose name you used shows up right after you’ve been invited in. On a failure, however, this might bar your entry to the location entirely for a time.

Escalations reflect the truth of life, succeeding isn’t simple and sometimes comes with unforeseen consequences.

Of course this is a very short overview of the mechanic, just a simplified sneak peek. Keep an eye on our updates for more previews.

Until next time, Immortals.
