Breaking Out of the Same Old Same Old: New Adversary Quests

When we launched the game, we wanted to make sure that every game was different. Replayability was a primary design goal. We wanted to make sure folks were getting their money's worth. However, super-fans and keen-eyed players noticed a pattern after playing multiple games: The Adversary quests come out in the same order every time. Originally, we wanted to make sure that we could balance the difficulty of each month so that it scaled as the players got more powerful. After thousands of plays millions of bits of data, we’re much more comfortable with how monthly quests impact win rates and the overall play experience. We have a better understanding of when quests come out, what effects drive certain outcomes, and how we can scale their difficulty. With all that additional experience and knowledge, we knew we could get more creative in the Adversary's monthly machinations.

Ashstrider's laughter echoes throughout the kingdom as it relishes the destruction it has wrought.

So get ready for a whole new batch of monthly adversary quests. We're still crafting these and haven't finished testing them and, frankly, we don't want to spoil the surprises. So no big list of what's in store, but you can get a hint of what's to come in the image. After we finish developing and testing, we’ll roll the new quests out in a future app update. Then, in all games (base and expansions), instead of a set roster of quests, the adversaries will change how they attempt to stop you, choosing randomly from multiple options. Overall, the quests will become less predictable. Each adversary will have a pool of quests that the app will choose from each month. Your next play against Ashstrider may not begin with a quest to prevent more Rivers of Fire. Instead, it might find you avoiding adding a swath of skulls to the board.

This means that experienced players won’t be able to predict how each Adversary will respond to them. Now, regardless of the combinations you use, there will be more replayability both for the adversaries and the main goals.

I am new with the game, and just backed recently, I am super hyped ! A question, does new monthly adversary quests means new adversaries ? What I mean by that is, as I plan to get the dark horde expansion, if we get new adversaries/monsters, will we also get minis for them ? Thank you so much :)

Now new minis/adversaries, just that when you face the same ones over and over again they will have a larger pool of quests that will make them more unpredictable. This game is so good and you are going to love it!

This is precisely what the game needs. And this is a perfect opportunity to add an activate tower button to the app. Then we can also design our own scenarios on paper and then activate the tower when the time comes. Think of it... player designed creatures for home brew scenarios. You could even have contests held at GenCon for the best new homebrew scenario each year! Just need a button to activte the tower.

This is a rather subtle but very valuable improvement to the game. Thanks for this. It will enhance the AI feel of the adversaries. I look forward to the increased randomness to my favorite adversaries.

Is there an ETA on patch? And any developments on 3player balancing?

oh interesting! what issue do you see with RTDT and 3 player balance? Is it that one kingdom becomes the sacrificial land that all the bad stuff happens to?

Wow, now we're talking! This is the type of app content update I was hoping for!

Will this include more competative play options?

Adversary quests do appear in competitive play, and these new ones will show up there too.

Amazing! Great update! Hopefully, as a final surprise, you would include a new enemy in the expansion, some kind of evil god, an ancient enemy of the gods of light...

I can tell you that we do not have any new foes or adversaries planned for this campaign. Maybe in the future.

I would also like a button on the app that allows players to manually activate the tower. This would allow us to spice up game play by affording us the ability to have more interesting homestyle play.

Or better yet, have a 1 vs all with the 1 player playing as the Adversary. It could also add potential for treasures that can manipulate the tower to your advantage but at a cost.
