Project Update: Let’s Look at Some Leitners!

Hello, backers!

We have some really cool stuff to share with all of you, but first, if any of the following add-ons are among your rewards, they're ready for you to redeem now:

  • GM Intrusion Deck in print and/or PDF
  • NPC Deck in print and/or PDF
  • Your Best Game Ever in print and/or PDF
  • The Weird in print and/or PDF

If one of the above add-ons is among your rewards, click here to redeem it.

For a refresher on how we fulfill rewards, check out (and bookmark) this article: How to Claim Your Crowdfunding Reward. To see a comprehensive list of your rewards, please view your BackerKit Pledge Manager for this campaign. And remember: You can wait to redeem some or all of your rewards so that you can bundle them and save on shipping.

And now back to the update! While The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game corebook continues through the review and editing process, we’ve been moving forward with the other rewards you funded. This month we have a not one, but two Leitners to show you.

OK, that’s not so much a Leitner as a Leitner-inspired item: it’s the book-safe-style dice box (with built-in dice tray) for the exclusive dice set. (It's fancier than the in-world book, but we and our friends at Rusty Quill agreed that a cool dice box was more important than a faithful recreation of the book.) At a glance it might not seem that different from the box you saw during the campaign, but it’s actually all new artwork—take a close look! The box and the dice are designed, approved, and in production. (This reward, while being the first to enter full-scale production, won’t deliver earlier than the corebook—manufacturing the components of this set takes longer than everything else in this campaign.)

Now let’s talk about an actual Leitner—and take a sneak peek into another book that’s coming out of the campaign: A Guest for Mr. Spider! We’re thrilled to be working with Kyle A. Scarborough (whose work you may have seen in Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game) who will be illustrating this Leitner. Check out this this work in progress from the book:

These illustrations give you a sense of where the book is headed stylistically. We think Kyle has nailed it—suffice to say, we can’t wait to get this book in your hands.

In addition, we’re already starting on the early stages of design and production for the playmat and the campaign journal. (These items couldn’t be fully designed until the corebook was written.) Manufacturing will take some time, but we’re exciting by how these are shaping up. We should have some images to show you in our next update!

Thanks again for your support!
—Team MCG

Oh, one more thing…

The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game
is powered by the Cypher System (with a few customizations). If you’re new to the Cypher System, you’re in for a treat—it’s amazingly easy to play and run, really built around narrative and character, and fast-paced and fun. And it’s flexible enough to run virtually any campaign you can imagine.

You can run your games in the Cypher System right now. All you need is the Cypher System Rulebook, although we also make a fantastic line of genre and setting supplements that expand the experience. You can get a fantastic deal on Cypher System titles (including the upcoming Cypher System Starter Set) through our current crowdfunding campaign, Knights of Dust and Neon. And the best part: Every pledge level includes the complete Cypher System Rulebook in PDF. So you can launch a Cypher System campaign right away, or get a handle on the Cypher System rules as you start thinking about your forthcoming The Magnus Archives game. Check it out!

Project Update: Mini-update on Fulfillment of Exsiting Add-on Products

Hello backers,

I hope you are having a wonderful weekend. I wanted to give you a quick, brief update on fulfillment of the existing add-ons, which I will be working on for the next couple of days.

Because of the large number of titles, in both print and PDF (and PDFs are fulfilling through both the MCG Shop and DriveThruRPG), it will take some time to get through them all. If these items are among your rewards, you’ll receive notification messages from the MCG Shop and/or DriveThruRPG as rewards become available. Please note:

  • If you’re entitled to multiple rewards and don’t receive notification about all of them immediately, please be patient. Getting through all the rewards will take a week or so.
  • If you’re entitled to multiple physical rewards, remember that you don’t need to fulfill them immediately. You can wait to fulfill multiple rewards in print at the same time to save on shipping costs.

Currently in the process of being fulfilled are:

  • The Weird in print
  • The Weird in PDF
  • GM Intrusion Deck in PDF

If any of the above products are among your rewards, you can redeem them now on the MCG Shop. (If any of the print items below are among your rewards, you might consider waiting to redeem all of them together to save on the cost of shipping.)

Expect fulfillment for these existing products in the days to come:

  • Your Best Game Ever in print
  • Your Best Game Ever in PDF
  • NPC Deck in PDF

Soon—when the freshly printed decks reach our warehouses—I will be working on fulfillment for the GM Intrusion Deck in print and the NPC Deck in print.

Happy gaming,
Tammie and Team MCG

Project Update: Statement Begins: A Preview of an In-house Playtest

Hello, backers!

In our last update we mentioned that internal playtesting was underway. We thought it would be fun to share the statement that launched Monte’s most recent playtest adventure. (You may see a very similar statement in the book itself.)

The Resurrection Mound

The following is the statement of Karen Jeong, regarding a pest control issue in her home, made at the Magnus Institute following the standard procedures.

Statement begins.

My name is Karen Jeong, and my family and I live out on Stonecrest Lane, south of town. I’m here to tell you about the thing in my backyard.

About six months ago, we began to notice flying bugs we couldn’t identify in our yard. They were red and green and looked like hornets a little bit. They would give you a painful sting if you disturbed them, but otherwise they left us alone. About a week after we first noticed them, we found a nest in the grass toward the back corner of our yard. It was hard and reddish-brown in color, with little holes for the bugs to go in and out. I don’t mean to sound dramatic, but it reminded me of the carcinoma my mother developed before she died. It even had the sort of odor that I remember from her deathbed.

My husband Tom decided right then to call an exterminator. He phoned Beacon and Howe Pest Control but they couldn’t come out for almost a week. We told our son Nicholas to keep away from the nest and waited.

The two men they sent out were strange. Huge, slow-moving men in gray uniforms went straight into the backyard like they knew where they were going. Looking at the nest, which had grown to be almost six inches high with many more of the hornet things buzzing around, one of them asked, “Are you sure you don’t want to keep it?”

What a strange question! We said we wanted it and the bugs dealt with and they agreed. The one that spoke (only one of them ever spoke) advised us to go inside. We did, and they went and got some kind of hinged wooden box from their van. Using shovels, they pried the nest up from the ground as a single piece, put it in the box, and drove off. They didn’t wear any protective clothing, but the insects didn’t seem to bother them.

We went out in the yard, and there was just a shallow hole where the nest was, and no bugs to be seen. We thought we were done with it, although Tom worried that they hadn’t mentioned the charge nor given us an invoice.

About a week later, we started noticing the red and green bugs were back. I checked the spot and the nest was back too. They’d already rebuilt it to the size it had been before. Maybe even a bit larger.

I called Beacon and Howe to tell them the job wasn’t finished. The man on the phone said they’d be out again in a week. I told them we wouldn’t pay unless they were really taken care of. “You need to guarantee your work if you’re going to stay in business,” I told him. He just replied “Uh huh,” and hung up.

While we waited, we kept an eye on the nest, and it every day it grew a little more, looking like a mound or a little tower filled with tiny holes.

Even though I’d tried to keep him away from it, one evening Nicholas noticed small animal bones protruding from it. The nest was almost fifteen or sixteen inches high at this point. The next morning, my husband wanted to take photos to show the exterminators when they returned. When we went out there, though, the bones were gone, and the mound looked disturbed, like something had kicked it. Maybe an animal, we thought, but that was a sure way to get a lot of stings.

The exterminators didn’t show up the following week, and my calls just went to a voicemail. The mound stood about two feet high at this point, and Tom took some photos of the very strange moment when we saw that the insects were all swarming in a bundle. It turned out they were swarming over a dead squirrel. Dozens and dozens of them. And they weren’t eating it like we thought at first. They were dragging it toward the mound. I almost threw up.

No amount of searching on the Internet gave us any answers about what kind of bugs these were. I did find a photo of a nest very much like what we had, from out near the Badlands in South Dakota. It was labeled “The Res Mound,” as it was on a Native American reservation, but there was no further information.

That Saturday, Tom said he was going to drive to Beacon and Howe’s office to talk to someone directly. I tried to get an appointment with a different exterminator, but wasn’t having any luck. While I tried, Nicholas came into the kitchen.

“Mom, something’s weird.” He took me out to the backyard, and we saw a very sick-looking squirrel. Its fur was ragged and it looked emaciated. “I think those bugs have been attacking it,” I said. “Do not go out there. Those things are dangerous.”

But then, as we watched, the squirrel’s mouth opened and one of the red and green insects pulled itself out of it. We both gasped. The bugs were inside it? Was it the same squirrel we’d seen before? But that poor thing had been dead, without a doubt. This one was alive, but not doing well. “It must be a different one,” I said under my breath.

Nicholas said quietly, “It’s the same one. I was just looking at Dad’s pictures.”

The phone rang, and I hoped it was one of the exterminators returning my calls. It wasn’t. It was the police.

Tom had been killed in a hit-and-run accident on the way back from Beacon and Howe.

The next week is a blur. Not a week. Nine days. I won’t go into all of that. I can’t even if I wanted to. I’m sure you can fill in those details yourself. Obviously, Nicholas and I were devastated. Are devastated. I can’t even think straight to write this all down.

The only thing I really remember from that week, amid the funeral, the family, and all the arrangements, was a single moment staring out into our backyard. The squirrel we’d seen that had looked so bedraggled was running up the tree next to the house and it looked… fine. There were some scars in places where its skin was still bare but it scampered about as if nothing was wrong.

I stepped out the back door and looked to the mound. It was at least three feet high now, a crusty tower riddled with dark, finger-sized holes. At the base of it, the bugs were swarming over something again, inching it toward the nest. I think it might have been a dead cat.

It all became clear at that moment. “Res Mound” didn’t refer to “reservation.”

I’m going to sprinkle Thomas’ ashes on the mound tonight.

End of statement.

(Statements for the game are intentionally shorter than those in the podcast and leave things more open-ended or unresolved—so the PCs have more to do.)

Speaking of Playtesting…

Monte and the design team’s early playtests have been focused on tweaking new rules and systems within the game, but if you backed at the Entity level, we're already starting to look forward to providing you early access and playtest materials. We’ll have more info on that in our next update.

In the meantime, large chunks of the corebook have begun moving out of design and into the editing and approvals stage. And we’re working on other rewards too. As soon as we have final designs for some of those, approved by our friends at Rusty Quill, we’ll give you a look.

Thanks again for you support!

Project Update: A Quick End-of-Year Update

Hello, backers!

Since the end of the crowdfunding campaign for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, Monte and the design team have been quietly plugging away at the game’s design. Most of the work so far has gone into the two largest chapters: Monsters and NPCs, and Running the Game. But mechanics are being hashed out and playtested for a variety of new systems, including stress and damage and the process of crafting a statement (which Monte previewed during the campaign in this article).

Everything’s on track—fortunately we planned for design to go a bit slower for this than for one of our typical projects, because there's so much research involved. The design team practically has the podcast transcripts memorized at this point!

We’ll have a more comprehensive look at some of the other items next month. (We can’t wait to show off the design for the Boneturner’s Tale dice box—it’s really spectacular. We’ve just passed it over to the Rusty Quill team for their approval; we’ll give you a look when we have their thumbs-up.)

In the meantime, have a wonderful holiday season! Speaking of which. . .

It’s a holiday tradition at MCG: we give you $10, and you can use it to get something at the MCG Shop—or donate it to charity! 100% of the donation goes to the chosen charity, and over the years we’ve given thousands to some really worthy causes. So take $10 off a gift for a loved one (or yourself!) or tell us which charity you’d like us to give it to. It’s the MCG Holiday Gift!

Thanks again for such a fantastic campaign!

Project Update: It's Time to Charge Cards for Additional Add-ons and Preorders

Greetings backers—

Thank you again for making this campaign magnificently successful!

Today we are locking orders and charging cards for all those who purchased additional add-ons through the pledge manager and also for all pre-orders to date. If a charge is attempted and declined by your credit card company, you will receive a message and have an opportunity to fix the issue.

Because there was an option to purchase add-ons during the campaign and also again after the campaign, we want to be really clear: There will be no double charges. Add-ons purchased while the campaign was active were charged when the campaign ended. Add-ons purchased after the pledge manager opened will be charged today.

Monte, Bruce, and Sean have been hard at work on The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game. I've seen several exchanges between Monte and Bruce about monsters and wow—you are going to be pleased!

As always, if you have questions or need help with your pledge, please reach out to us through our Contact Us page and we will be happy to help you.

Warm regards,
Tammie and Team MCG

Project Update: BackerKit Pledge Manager Opening

Greetings backers!

This is a mini-update to let you know that we've started opening the BackerKit Pledge Manager for this campaign . . . huzzah!

The first step in opening BackerKit Pledge Manager is to send surveys to 5% of backers (selected at random) from each pledge level. BackerKit calls this step the Smoke Test. Once those surveys are sent, BackerKit collates data on the response rate, the proportion of support inquiries received, and the add-on purchase rate to let us know if the survey and pledge questions are working appropriately.

Once we’re sure all is well, surveys will be sent to all remaining backers in batches (5,000 at a time). This process—from Smoke Test to sending surveys to all backers—will take a few days to complete, so please be patient.

If you experience any issues completing your survey, please reach out to us through our Contact Us page and we will be happy to help you.

Warm regards,
Tammie and Team MCG

Project Update: Wow! What a Fantastic Conclusion to this Amazing Campaign!

Thank you again, backers!

Because of your support, along with that of nearly 12,000 other backers, this campaign has soared to an amazing result. Would you be surprised to learn we ended up just making it in as the 10th largest RPG crowdfunding campaign ever? Clearly you love The Magnus Archives as much as we do—and we’re really thrilled that you’ve unlocked so much to make this game, and the fun stuff we’re looking forward to making alongside it, as awesome as it can possibly be. We really appreciate your support and your faith in us.

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ the next couple of sections. We have some other info to share after that, but what follows here is critical.

The Immediate Future

Running a big crowdfunding campaign is hard work. We’re going to take a little time off. You may not hear from us for a little while, but don’t worry. We’ve delivered on over two dozen large crowdfunding campaigns over the past ten+ years, and we’ll be working diligently on your rewards in the weeks and months to come.

The Next Few Weeks

BackerKit began collecting pledges the moment the campaign closed. But it takes them a full two weeks to release those funds, along with the data on our backers.

In the meantime, we will get the pledge manager fully set up. The pledge manager gives us information we need to fulfill your pledge and lets you manage your add-ons and make any pledge upgrades you want. We’ll notify you when we open the pledge manager, which should be in two or three weeks.

HERE’S SOME SUPER IMPORTANT STUFF:

  • The pledge manager is vital to getting your rewards. We CANNOT FULFILL your rewards if you don’t respond to the pledge manager!
  • In the pledge manager, we’re going to ask for your email address. YOU MUST provide an address you can use later at the MCG Shop. DO NOT use an email proxy (like Apple Hide My Email), or an address you won’t have access to (like a school-issued address)—or you won’t be able to claim your rewards!
  • Later, when your rewards are available, we’ll give you instructions on how to claim them. This process ensures, among other benefits, that we collect your accurate shipping address at the time of fulfillment. DON’T IGNORE OUR COMMUNICATIONS, or you won’t get your rewards!

The Next Few Months
Once you’ve completed the pledge manager survey, we won’t need anything else from you until it’s time to start fulfilling rewards. We’ll be busy crafting your products and rewards in the months to come. We’ll post regular updates, but if you don’t hear anything for a few weeks, don’t fret.

At the same time, please pay attention when you do get communications from us. Our emails and updates include critical information about your rewards.

When Your Rewards Ship

Every time a reward is ready for you, we’ll contact you by email to begin the fulfillment process. Generally, we’ll direct you to the MCG Shop, where you’ll log in, “buy” the product (for free, because you’ve already paid for it through this campaign), and check out.

This is an important part of the process because it ensures we have accurate delivery information for every item we send out. (With thousands of backers getting rewards, it's amazing how many people will change their address over the fulfillment period.) You'll pay for shipping at that time.

Make sure to pay attention to communications from us—don't let our updates or emails go to your spam folder, or otherwise ignore them, because if you do you could miss out on some of your rewards.

OK, Enough Business—Now Some Fun Stuff

First, some thanks:

While this campaign rolled along, the design team (Monte, Sean, Bruce, Shanna, and Dominique) has been working on The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, while also keeping our other projects, such as It’s Only Magic and the Cypher System Bestiary, on track.

Bear
, supported by Javier (and the many great illustrators they work with), coordinated the artwork and handled the graphic design of this campaign, while they were also busy getting titles like The Weird and The Glimmering Valley off to press.

Teri
and Tammie wrangled words and logistics of this campaign, and Jen, Olivia, and Kate provided answers and support to you, our wonderful community, here and everywhere gamers congregate online. The man behind the curtain of these updates is Charles, who has planned and run this campaign.

All of us at MCG want to extend our thanks to all of you who made this an incredibly successful—and fun—campaign. Your support brings our imagination to life and to thousands of game tables.

And now for something completely different…
If you loved the Prop Set stretch goal we unlocked this morning, you’ll really love Invisible Sun. It’s the ultimate “boxed set” RPG, filled with wondrous contents. And the setting is unlike anything ever before published—a surreal and colorful world (of which our own is a grey shadow) in which magic is truly magical.

The legendary Invisible Sun Black Cube is one of the most sought-after RPG products ever—and now it’s coming back into print. Sign up to be notified of the reprint campaign’s launch.

Thanks again for such a fantastic campaign!

Project Update: $2,000,000! Upgrades and Audio Statements Unlocked!

Thank you, backers!

You’ve done it: in the final hours of this campaign you sent our total soaring past the $2 million mark! In so doing, you also unlocked the final stretch goal. Jonny Sims will read the statements for the investigations included in the corebook, and you’ll be able to download those files for use in your game. How cool is that?

And because this is such a milestone, the stretch goal goes further: you’ve also unlocked upgrades to the deluxe edition of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game and an expansion of the very cool GM’s Campaign Journal.

There’s not much time left in this campaign. It will continue to grow through its remaining hour or so, but there isn’t really time to pursue another stretch goal. We couldn’t be happier with those you’ve unlocked over the course of this campaign, though. We’re going to make a very cool game, and a lot of really great products to go with it!

Please spread the word one more time, so other gamers have an opportunity to get in on this campaign before it reaches its end. And look for some important news from us as the campaign closes.

Thanks for your support!

Project Update: The Prop Set Is Unlocked! Let’s Do Even More!

Hello, backers. Wow, what an exciting week you’ve given us so far! This campaign is on fire—we just blew through yet another stretch goal, and the Prop Set is now unlocked. It’s available as an add-on, and backers at the Entity pledge level are now getting it as part of their rewards.

Believe it or not, there’s still time to unlock at least one more stretch goal—a campaign of this size, blazing as brightly as you have it blazing, can do amazing things in the final 24 hours! This one would take us to an astonishing $2,000,000, making it one of only about ten RPG crowdfunding campaigns to hit this level. To celebrate, let’s make our most special rewards even more special.

At $2,000,000 we’ll unlock a suite of upgrades:

  • We’ll add additional satin bookmarks to the deluxe version, increasing both its beauty and utility.
  • We’ll increase the page count of the GM’s Campaign Journal, again making this elegant tool that much more useful.

And most exciting of all:

  • Jonny Sims, in the voice of the Archivist, will read the statements for the adventures in the corebook. As with the audio assets we unlocked earlier this week, there will be a link in the book to download this audio.

You already unlocked a stretch goal, earlier in this campaign, to increase the number of adventures (called investigations in The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game) in the book, so this new goal builds upon improvements you’ve already unlocked.

Each of these items would normally be individual stretch goals, but this is such a momentous milestone that we want to really celebrate!

We’re Down to the Final Hours…

It’s been an amazing final week—and it’s not over yet. Help keep the buzz going, and share this campaign. There are still thousands of gamers out there who don’t even know about it! Help us reach them, and take this campaign to amazing places in this final day!

Thanks for your support!

Project Update: Audio Assets Unlocked! Prop Set Is Next!

Hello, backers! Things have really been heating up as we move through this final week of the campaign—and we have unlocked another stretch goal!

We’ll work with Alex, Jonny, and our other friends at Rusty Quill to produce a suite of audio assets to give your game an authentic The Magnus Archives feel. You’ll be able to download these files via a link that will be included in the corebook. Play them to provide specific sound effects, to hear descriptions of key items, locations, or creatures in the voices you know from the podcast, or to add background ambiance to your game.

Next Up: the Prop Set

We announced this in our last update, but it’s a very exciting stretch goal (and we have a lot of new backers), so let’s take another look:

That’s a prop set we made for Invisible Sun, another of our games. It contains old letters and pages torn from long-lost books, forms, business cards, invitations, menus, signs, handbills, posters, letterhead, brochures, postcards, train and theatre tickets, and more, all filled with mysteries, clues, and potential plot hooks.

Great props are so much fun to use at the game table and really bring the game to life. Imagine handing the players a Breekon and Hope bill of lading when they investigate that strange shipment mentioned in a recent statement. Or a business card found in the files of another case. These things give a sense of authenticity to your game and immerse the players in the creepy mystery of their investigations. We’d like to give you those props, and more, in a set very similar to the Invisible Sun props you see above.

The prop set will be available as an add-on and included in the rewards at the Entity pledge level. We’ll unlock it at $1,850,000.

(If Invisible Sun looks intriguing to you, check this out!)

Let’s Make This Happen!

Things have really heated up this week. We still have two days left—often two of the most exciting days of a campaign! Unlocking this goal is within reach, and it’s even possible we could reach more stretch goals—IF you help spread the word.

Share this campaign on the social media platforms of your choice. There are still thousands and thousands of gamers out there who haven’t heard about it—or don’t realize how cool this game is going to be.

Thanks for your support!

Project Update: Playmat Unlocked! Let’s Talk TWO Stretch Goals!

Hello, backers! As we head into the exciting final days of this campaign, we’re excited to have unlocked yet another stretch goal:
Image of The Magnus Archives playmat
The playmat for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game has been unlocked! It’s now available as an add-on. Even better: It’s been added automagically to the Avatar and Entity pledge levels. These levels were a great deal to begin with, and are now even better—if you’re not backing at one of those levels, you might want to think about an upgrade!

What’s next? We normally announce our goals one at a time—but in his recent interview on Cypher Unlimited Live, Monte might have let slip about a goal we’d like to hit, so let’s talk about that one, too.

How Would You Like Some Audio?

Next up: audio assets. We’ll work with Alex, Jonny, and our other friends at Rusty Quill to produce a suite of audio assets that will give your game an authentic The Magnus Archives feel. Play these files to add some background ambiance, to provide specific sound effects, or even to hear descriptions of key items, locations, or creatures in the voices you know from the podcast.

These audio files will be made part of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game, via a link provided in the corebook—so every backer’s rewards get better. We’ll unlock them at $1,700,000.

And Some Really Cool Props!?

Have a look at this:

That’s a prop set we made for Invisible Sun, another of our games. That prop set contains invitations, tickets, playbills, old letters, menus, business cards, signs, handbills, posters, train and theatre tickets, letterhead, brochures, postcards, pages torn from long-lost books, and more, all filled with mysteries, clues, and hooks.

Few things draw players into a game, and make their eyes light up at the game table, like well-crafted props—and The Magnus Archives is a great setting for including them.

The prop set will be available as an add-on, and included in the rewards at the Entity pledge level. We’ll unlock it at $1,850,000.

(If Invisible Sun looks intriguing to you, check this out!)

Can We Do It?

Yes!

The final days of a campaign like this one are often some of the most exciting! Our crowdfunding campaign for the Old Gods of Appalachia Roleplaying Game received nearly $500,000 in pledges in the final four days, so it’s absolutely possible to unlock these goals—and maybe one or two more—before this campaign ends.

IF
you help spread the word. Share this campaign on the social media platforms of your choice. There are still thousands of thousands of gamers out there who haven’t heard about it—or don’t realize how cool this game is going to be.
Thanks for your support!

Project Update: New Investigations Unlocked! Let’s Make Another Item!

We’ve unlocked yet another stretch goal, backers, adding new adventure content to The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game. This grows both the standard corebook and the Limited Deluxe Edition—making everyone’s rewards better!

Here’s what we have in mind for our next stretch goal:
In the Cypher System, players roll all the dice. And there aren’t a great many tables or charts a GM needs to reference during play. So many gaming groups prefer an alternative to the traditional GM screen, one that removes the barrier between GM and player.

The Magnus Archives playmat will be a beautiful centerpiece on your gaming table. And along the edges you’ll have reference info of interest to the GM and the players—things like stress sources, the damage track, and special roll result info; task difficulty and damage from hazards tables for the GM; and distance definitions, weapon damage info, and other things players and GMs sometimes look up during play. It’ll all be there in front of you so that you can focus on your story, not on flipping through the book.

The pleasant fabric surface with rubberized backing gives you a great die-rolling surface. It’s well-sized at 24″ x 32″, large enough to show off its art and information nicely, but not too big for your gaming table. And of course it will feature striking artwork from The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game.

It will be available as an add-on and added to the rewards for backers at the Avatar and Entity pledge levels! That's right: if you're backing at one of those levels, this will automagically be added to your rewards. And if you're not—time to start thinking about upgrading?

We’ll unlock the playmat at $1,550,000.

This has been a really exciting campaign, but there are still thousands of gamers out there who haven’t even heard of this campaign yet, or who don’t grok how cool an RPG of The Magnus Archives will be. Won’t you help spread the word a bit? The more we help them find this campaign, the faster we’ll hit stretch goals, and the more we’ll unlock!

Project Update: A Look at Some Rules—Plus Monte Live Tonight!

We have a bunch of interesting stuff to share with you this evening—including a peek at the rules for The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game (specifically, some of the ways in which they differ from the standard Cypher System rules). But first:

Join Monte on Cypher Unlimited Tonight!

Monte will join the guys on Cypher Unlimited live, tonight! Come join the conversation, and ask your questions about the game, the process, or, well, anything else you’d like to ask Monte.

The event starts at 10:00 p.m. EDT (7:00 p.m. PDT), on the Cypher Unlimited Twitch channel.

If you can’t make the show, we also have an AMA up on the Cypher Unlimited Discord. Drop by and post your questions there!

A New Pledge Level!

We’ve had some requests for a PDF-only pledge level that includes all the PDFs offered by the campaign. So . . . we’ve done it! If you’re backing at the Intern level, you might be interested in an inexpensive upgrade to File Clerk. You’ll get (in addition to the corebook in PDF) all the PDF items currently available through the campaign, including the GM campaign journal, the character portfolios, and the Player’s Guide.

Even better, you get PDF stretch goals—and one’s already been unlocked!

A Look into the Rules

We’ve just posted an article to the MCG website that looks at some of the design work going into The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game. Take a look at how stress, damage, characters, and avatar abilities will function in the game. The article also touches on the role of statements in your game—but Monte has a much more detailed article on that subject coming soon!

Project Update: Art Plates Added to the Deluxe—Now Let’s Upgrade the Standard!

This campaign continues to soar—thank you, backers, for your amazing support and your help spreading the word!

We’ve unlocked another stretch goal, and the Limited Deluxe Edition of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game will now get an upgrade, with roughly 8 pages of full-page art plates added to the book. Everyone getting the deluxe book—backers at the Archivist level and up—are getting a rewards upgrade as a result of this goal.

So now let’s upgrade everyone’s rewards!

Adventures in The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game are referred to as “investigations,” and every investigation is instigated by a statement. We’re already planning to include a couple of ready-to-play investigations in the corebook, but we think everyone would enjoy more. So, for our next stretch goal, let’s increase the investigations in the book, expanding the page count of both the standard and the Limited Deluxe Edition.

We’ll unlock this goal at $1,400,000. Every pledge level will benefit from this goal, so please help us shout it from the rooftops!

Project Update: File Folders Unlocked! How About a Deluxe Upgrade?

Backers, you gave us such a wonderful and amazing launch day yesterday. And that excitement continues—our second day is on fire as well. So much so that we’ve unlocked another stretch goal!
The file folder set is now a reality! This set of a dozen file folders will be great as part of immersive props, or just to store your maps, handouts, and other documents that accumulate in a fun campaign. It’s now an add-on, and has been added to the rewards of all backers at the Entity pledge level.
We’re super excited about the Limited Deluxe Edition version of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game—it’s going to be beautiful. But could it be even better? We have a few ideas!

Let’s start by adding some art plates to the deluxe edition. We’ll reproduce some of the best art from the book in full-page format, really showing it off. This will increase the size of the book by about eight pages.

Everyone who is getting the Limited Deluxe Edition version of The Magnus Archives Roleplaying Game (every pledge level from Archivist on up) will see their rewards upgraded by this goal. We’ll unlock it at $1,200,000.

The 48-hour deadline for the Magnus Institute cassette is nearing! If you know anyone who hasn’t backed yet, tell them to get on board quickly to claim this exclusive reward!
