Project Update: Fantasy Heroes Unbound’s Infinite Subclasses

Hey, backers! The campaign is down to its final days and pledges continue to come in as we approach unlocking the two $60K stretch goals. Thanks for supporting getting Fantasy Heroes Unbound into your hands.

Infinite Subclasses?

As you may know from the RPG Primer, each Unbound Class is constructed from 120 Points across 20 Levels to maintain balance with the PHB Classes.

Although the range of Attribute offerings for Unbound Classes is diverse, there is also a selection of standard offerings across the 20 Levels for most Classes. This would be somewhat similar to how all PHB Classes receive an Ability Score Improvement at set Levels and Subclass options at semi-regular intervals.

Unbound Classes are granted 3 Bonus Points at regular intervals that can be used to acquire Attributes of their choice. This unrestricted benefit replaces the need for PHB-style Subclasses, since players can create unique archetypes for their characters as they see fit using these Bonus Points. There’s no need to limit yourself to only four Subclass options when Attributes combinations can produce nearly infinite Subclasses!

The Khromys setting expansion contains one full build recommendation for each Unbound Class that is analogous to a PHB Subclass. While these builds each have roots in the continent of Sapheris, all can serve as templates for players who want to simplify their progression in a particular Class. These builds provide suggestions for the allocation of Bonus Points offered by each Class, choices for open Attributes options (such as Aspect and Knack), and categories for the Concept Attribute.

Subclass Example: Superheavy Tank

While many member of the Tank Class balance defence with weapon skills or mobility, the Superheavy eschews versatility to excel at a single role: absorbing damage for their allies. They stack heavy armour, bolster personal defences, and maintain the mobility required to intervene directly whenever a teammate is threatened. Frontline anchors by design, Superheavies draw enemy ire and endure punishment that would crush lesser warriors.

This single-minded dedication earns Superheavies widespread respect across various cultures. They serve as knights in feudal kingdoms, key frontline protectors in egalitarian societies, and the core foot soldiers within the Fiend Empire’s Legions. Companions and citizens alike admire their valour and protective ethos.

In tactical combat, Superheavies adopt diverse approaches. Militaries deploy them in tight shield walls, whereas adventurers tailor their gear for specific roles. Some pair a one-handed weapon with a shield to maximise combat endurance, while others wield heavy, potent weapons to strike back aggressively. At higher levels, their durability scales with the damage they sustain; combined with the Regeneration Attribute, Superheavies actively restore their health while gaining combat power.

Review the two tables below. The top one shows the standard Tank Class’s progression over 20 Levels. The lower Superheavy table from Khromys then shows the starting Skill proficiencies, where the Bonus Points are spent, and how the Attribute choices are selected. Levels are skipped if the entry offers no option for Ability or Attribute allocation.

We hope you enjoyed today’s sneak peek. We’ll check in again soon.
