Project Update: Fantasy Heroes Unbound’s Optional Rules

The Fantasy Heroes Unbound funding campaign ends tomorrow and we’re more than half way to unlocking the two stretch goals at $60K – the triple bookmark ribbons for the Deluxe Limited Edition and the pre-get pack of novice adventurers. We’re confident that milestone is in reach!

Optional Rules

Although Fantasy Heroes Unbound uses the Fifth Edition framework as its base, many of the game rules have been tweaked a little or reworked completely to provide a great gaming experience. We also include numerous optional rule sidebars throughout the game to present different ways of approaching a problem. Here’s a sneak peek of a few of them.

✅ Athletic Movement
With DM permission, a character proficient in Athletics can add their Proficiency Bonus to their Strength Score when calculating jumping distance and height as well as to Constitution Saving Throws to determine if they gain Exhaustion levels when taking the Sprint action during consecutive turns.

✅ Group Help
When two or more characters apply the same Ability in a manner that would be feasibly additive, the leader of the effort receives Advantage on their Ability check to accomplish the task. Optionally, the DM may consider the task easier with several helpers, granting a +1 bonus to the check total for each additional helper beyond the first if warranted by the circumstances (such as folk working together to lift a heavy wagon off a trapped child). The DM may limit co-operation where it would be infeasible.

✅ Collateral Damage
At the DM’s discretion, a missed attack roll with a ranged weapon may inflict collateral damage on nearby people, objects, or environment if the shot strikes somewhere else instead or if the attack has an area of effect (i.e. a cone, line, or sphere shape).

✅ Flanking
When multiple melee attackers move in on a single opponent, they may attempt to flank the defender if the terrain permits approaching from different sides. Flanking requires a minimum spacing between the attackers to allow for multiple attack angles. Consequently, no more than two attackers may flank a target simultaneously, and the choice of flankers is selected by the target; the others are considered primary attackers. Each flanking attacker gains a +2 bonus on their attacks, but primary attackers do not receive any related combat modifiers.

That’s all for now. Thank you again for your continued support. Please don’t forget to spread the word about the campaign through these final hours so it can have a strong finish!
