Project Update: MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE: FRICTION
MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE: FRICTION
Dear terraformers,
We hope August is treating you well. We bring you a new message after a new astronomical event: the eclipse. The Moon passed in front of the Sun to cast its shadow over the Earth, a total eclipse in some regions. Quite an event, one that historically has (temporarily) affected living beings on the surface of the Earth. Before continuing with more details about the roleplaying game, we want to briefly share a curious fact about Mars.
Are there eclipses on Mars?
Are there eclipses on Mars?
Indeed there are. Its two moons, Phobos and Deimos, cast their shadow over the Red Planet as they pass in front of the Sun. However, their shadow is smaller and they don't manage to fully cover the Sun, since both moons are quite small by comparison. Besides their size, their shapes are irregular. Because of all this, eclipses on Mars aren't total, only partial. Their duration is also shorter.
Since a picture is worth a thousand words, here's a video recorded by NASA's Perseverance Mars rover, capturing the transit of Phobos.
Project status
The team continues working on the project. The authors keep developing the core rulebook, The Great Campaign of Mars, and the rest of the supplements and modules. Everything is being tested and polished to be perfect, both in tone and in the things that will make Terraforming Mars: the Roleplaying Game, unique. We'll keep sharing the authors' words and the game's design details.
This time, we're showing you one of the features that will make the game special: Friction.
It's a way of representing the problems, obstacles, and opponents that the PCs may encounter. It has a special way of being managed, combining Friction dice, element intensity, friction type, era, and GM decisions, which makes Friction interesting and interactive.
To help you understand it better, here are some words from Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan about this system. Afterward, we'll share an outline of everything Friction will cover, so you have a fuller preliminary view of what it will be.
Mars Design Notebook: Friction, by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan
We borrowed this use of the term 'friction' from wargaming and military theory – it's a shorthand for 'everything that goes wrong'. The Gamemaster has a Friction budget that they've got to spend every phase. There's a whole chapter of possible forms of Friction: radiation, the effects of cold, bureaucratic or corporate infighting, opposing forces, bad luck.... think of it as a wandering problem table.
Mars wants to kill you, and has a lot of ways to try. While some forms of Friction are very simple – a dice penalty, an added obstacle that makes the Project more costly – others have more complex rules, forcing the players to make decisions and weigh options. Do they take time to co-operate with the UNMI inspector, or try to sprint past the red tape? Maybe that solar flare won't be as bad, and anyway, the spaceship's shielded against radiation...
Friction's designed to make obstacles and hazards as interesting and interactive as combat – a necessity in a setting where environmental conditions are such a major factor. However, as you play through the eras of Martian terraforming, the types of Friction change. In the early eras (Pioneer and Corporate), environmental friction gets a discount, meaning it's cheaper for the Gamemaster to drop a duststorm or a solar flare on the crew; later, the discounts encourage the GM to use corporate and political threats as Mars moves into the era of Turmoil.
Below is the outline for the chapter dedicated to Friction. Just to let you know what will you find in the corebook.
Chapter 7: Friction
7.1 Spending Friction Dice
Friction Dice are Exo-Dice - they get a free success.
7.2 Opponents
An opponent is a person/creature/robot on the same scale as the player characters. Corporate security forces, the negotiator across from you at the table, the raiders stealing your supplies, the escaped genetically engineered crocodile that wants to eat your shoes – all opponents.
Opponents have the same stats as player characters, or an appropriate subset (we might not care about the Corporate Negotiator’s Combat, and we certainly don’t need to know that the crocodile has a Scholarship of 0).
7.2.1 Generic Opponents
1-success: Ability-1 in one field, Ability 0 in others
2-success: Ability-2 in one field, Ability 1 in others
3-success: Ability-3 in one field, Ability 2/1 in others
4-success: Ability-4 in one field, Ability 3/2 in others
Opponents always come with a number of 1-success minions equal to the player characters
+1 success: Relevant specialty
+1 success: Relevant equipment or assets
+1 success: extra minions
+1 success: improved minions
7.3 Obstacles
An obstacle is something that the player characters need to overcome, and impedes their progress until they do. Obstacles work in the same way as challenges in a project – they’re a ‘bucket’ that you fill up with successes over a series of tests, or you find a clever way to bypass the obstacle.
Obstacles are measured by the number of successes needed to overcome them, and the suggested ability used to generate those successes.
7.31 Generic Obstacles
1-success: Obstacle needs 1 success to overcome
2-success: Obstacle needs 2 successes to overcome
3-success: Obstacle needs 3 successes to overcome
4-success: Obstacle needs 4 successes to overcome
+1 success: -1D penalty to attempts to remove obstacle
+2 successes: obstacle grows over time
+2 successes: obstacle cannot be bypassed
7.4 Hazards
A hazard is a temporary condition that might force the player characters to roll to avoid damage, or inflict a big penalty on them, or both. Your classic hazard is weather or natural disaster – it messes everything up for a while, but if you make it through intact, it doesn’t necessarily have any lasting effects.
Hazards are measured as a penalty to rolls – and complications may lead to damage.
7.4.1 Generic Hazard
1-success: -1D to all tests affected by the hazard this phase
2-success: -2D to all tests affected by the hazard this phase
3-success: -3D to all tests affected by the hazard this phase
4-success: -4D to all tests affected by the hazard this phase
+1 success: Extra damage based on complications (roll a complication, take a hit)
+1 success: Extra effect (equipment failure, system disrupted)
+2 successes: Extra damage to anyone caught in hazard
+2 successes: Permanent changes (clean-up becomes an Obstacle)
+3 successes: Increased duration (lasts twice as long)
7.5 Sample Friction
Lots of types of Friction, based on those on the various era/corporate/project sheets and problems that might arise in play.
7.5.1 Atmospheric Conditions
Obstacle: Tenting a martian canyon proves more difficult due to unexpected pressure shifts
Hazard: Explosive decompression of a dome due to an accident
Opposition: N/A
7.5.2 Extreme Cold
Obstacle: Ice build-up freezes tank valve open; someone needs to drive out and conduct repairs
Hazard: Temperature drop makes activity on the surface dangerous.
Hazard: Temperature drop makes activity on the surface dangerous.
Opposition: N/A
7.5.3 Extreme Weather
Obstacle: Dust Cloud
Hazard: High winds impede satellite launch
Hazard: High winds impede satellite launch
Opposition: N/A
7.5.4 Radiation
Obstacle: Solar flare disrupts communications
Hazard: Damaging radiation from fuel spill
Hazard: Damaging radiation from fuel spill
Opposition: N/A
7.5.5 Flooding
Obstacle: Underground aquifer makes mining more hazardous
Hazard: Flash flood threatens to wash away rover.
Hazard: Flash flood threatens to wash away rover.
Opposition: N/A
7.5.6 Limited Resources
Obstacle: Need to redesign planned construction as you’re missing components
Hazard: Corporation skimped on safety margins when buying prefab habitats
Hazard: Corporation skimped on safety margins when buying prefab habitats
Opposition: Raiders from the Martian highlands arrive to steal your stuff.
7.5.7 Political Strife
Obstacle: Terraforming Committee demands faster results.
Hazard: Anti-terraforming activists blockade your work site.
Hazard: Anti-terraforming activists blockade your work site.
Opposition: Saboteurs
7.5.8 Criminal Groups
Obstacle: Criminal gang demands protection money or they’ll smash those solar panels.
Hazard: You’re being hacked
Hazard: You’re being hacked
Opposition: Goons, Hired goons.
7.5.9 Rival Corporation Interference
Obstacle: Lawfare to delay your project
Hazard: Oh, did we forget to mention we’re dropping an asteroid just over the next hill? I hope it doesn’t interfere with your delicate experiments in cultivating lichen to grow on the surface.
Hazard: Oh, did we forget to mention we’re dropping an asteroid just over the next hill? I hope it doesn’t interfere with your delicate experiments in cultivating lichen to grow on the surface.
Opposition: Corporate strike team

ACTUALIZACIÓN DEL CUADERNO DE BITÁCORA DE MARTE: FRICCIÓN
Queridos terraformadores:

PROJECT UPDATE
Project Update: MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE (JULY): THE CORPORATIONS
MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE (JULY): THE CORPORATIONS
Dear terraformers,
We've just crossed the midpoint of the Earth year, with summer beginning in the northern hemisphere and winter in the southern hemisphere of our beloved Earth. We hope everything is going well for you. As a Martian curiosity, we'll share that, right now, on the red planet the exact opposite is happening. There it's winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere. Two planets, two opposite seasons, one single mission. So, when you're thinking about heading to Mars, keep the journey and arrival in mind.
Beyond this scientific curiosity, we want to share updated information on the state of the project.
Terraforming Mars, the Role-Playing Game
We've been away longer than expected and we apologize for the wait and the inconvenience. Starting today we're catching up and returning to our usual communication. However, this doesn't mean we've stopped working on the project. The entire Terraforming Mars, the Role-Playing Game team has kept moving forward.
How is the project coming along?
The project is currently in the writing phase. The designers, Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan and Kenneth Hite, continue working, revising, and testing the system. And here's something you can be sure of: they're doing excellent work. We want to share with you the pillars of Terraforming Mars, the Role-Playing Game, as well as the structure and content of the core rulebook.
The Core Rulebook
The main book of Terraforming Mars, the Role-Playing Game, will be made up of nine chapters and an appendix. Here's the content outline:
- Chapter 1: Introduction.
- Chapter 2: Crew Creation.
- Chapter 3: Basic Rules.
- Chapter 4: Projects.
- Chapter 5: Corporations.
- Chapter 6: Eras.
- Chapter 7: Friction.
- Chapter 8: Game play.
- Chapter 9: Sample project & Example of Play.
- Appendix.
One of the important parts of the gameplay experience has to do with the corporations, how they influence the characters and the very different plots they allow you to play. Chapter 5 is dedicated exclusively to developing them and giving you tools and rules for understanding how they influence characters and plotlines, as well as how to use them in play.
What happens when two corporations have a conflict of interest? How do you handle it when they compete and clash? What exactly does this chapter cover in detail?
We break all of this down in more detail below:
______
Chapter 5: Corporations
5.1. Corporate Background
A short overview of the corporate system, how they interact with their head offices back on Earth, the Terraforming Committee, World Government etc.
5.1.1 Non-Corporate Factions
UNMI, Tharsis Republic, Mining Guild, other factions
5.2 Corporate Sheets
Corporations also have sheets like Eras and Projects. Their sheets lists the various factors the player characters can call upon to help execute their projects. Calling on corporate factors requires a test and can permanently reduce your corporation’s available resources on Mars.
5.2.1 Drawing on Assets
Using corporate resources in projects. It’s an primary interpersonal roll, and successes give you Exodice at the cost of reducing the corporation’s assets permanently.
Corporate culture affects difficulty of drawing on their assets.
5.2.2 Rolling Exodice
Exodice work like normal dice, only they’re autosuccesses.
5.3 Corporate Contests
How to resolve clashes between corporations, playing as a corp.
5.4 Major Corporations
Each corporation has a 1-page writeup, a 1-page Corporate Sheet sheet and three 2-page Projects in its section
5.4.1 Credicor
Multibillionaire Bard Hunter likes terraforming, especially when it involves hurling asteroids at Mars. He also has a hunch that it’s going to pay off. His company CrediCor has all the resources he needs to jump right into the conflict.
Projects
l Audit
l Asteroid Crash
l Corporate Vulture
5.4.2 Ecoline
Having developed a fast-growing lichen suitable for early terraforming, this corporation’s ambition is to lead the taming of the planets, despite its relatively small size.
l Deploy Engineered Moss
l Contain Lab Leak
l GHG Bacteria
5.4.3 Helion
Developers of ultra-light solar sails, Helion now turns to the terraforming of Mars and other worlds. It promises to be a rewarding business, as Helion has already made a working model of a soletta, focussing sunlight down towards the frozen planet.
Helion Projects
l Secure Soletta
l Build GHG Factories
l Manage Outgassing
5.4.4 Interplanetary Cinematics
Finding funding where nations struggled, IC initiated the colonisation of Mars by turning the process into a soap opera infused with plenty of advertising. With the media’s attention and a head start on colonisation, IC sets out to terraform.
l Advertising Campaign
l Feature Film
l Investigative Journalism
5.4.5 Inventrix
Inventrix uses brains, as well as muscle, when competing with other mega-corps. Its motto being “do it right”, Inventrix is focussed on research.
l Lagrange Station
l Search for Life
l Designed Organism
5.4.6 Phobolog
Aiming to be the leader in space solutions for the Mars era, PhoboLog acquired several national space programs. This allowed them access to much existing infrastructure and technology, and they are not doing to let their advantage be wasted.
l Establish Phobos Base
l Asteroid Mining
l Secure Orbital Dominance
5.4.7 Saturn Systems
Having acquired the mining rights on several of Saturn’s moons. Saturn Systems gained plenty of experience over the years. As a supplier of rare metals, space ships and fuel, the company has made itself indispensable to the outer planets. Saturn Systems is now ready to play a key role in the terraforming of Mars.
l Coloniser Training Base
l Titanium Mining
l Import Nitrogen
5.4.8 Thorgate

l Beam from a Thorium Asteroid
l Build A Giant Dam
l Tap Aquifer
5.4.9 Teractor
Influence enough to control entire nations, and an army of lawyers and businessmen, has taken Teractor all the way to the top. And now the sky is calling. The strongest corporation on Earth wants to dominate space too…
l Establish Secure Area
l Tactical Strike
l Political Subversion
5.4.10 Mining Guild
The earliest private enterprises on Mars focussed on mining and exporting minerals off the surface. As the mega-corporations arrive to terraform, the miners unite in the Guild to defend their interests. With their expertise and knowledge of the planet they will be a worthy contender in the race.
l Mining Claim
l Secure Corporate Contract
l Great Escarpment Survey

We hope you like everything that's coming.
But that's not all. The authors have left us some words on the design philosophy and the highlights of this section on Corporations, their sheets, and how they can be used in your games.

Mars Design Notebook: Corporation and Era Sheets, by Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan
Terraforming Mars splits key information across several data sheets. You've got your Character Sheet. You've got your Project Sheets, which are a combination of a summary and informational sheet for the projects, serving both as player briefing and as GM notes. And then there are the Corporation Sheets and the Era Sheets.
Corporation Sheets
Corporation Sheets are basically character sheets for the various factions and Corporations you know from the boardgame – Ecoline, Tharsis Republic, Credicor, Teractor, and all the rest.
The core Terraforming Mars rulebook covers the same factions as the original Terraforming Mars boardgame; other corporations will be covered in future supplements. Your player characters can call in support from their patron faction, and you get a discount if you're drawing on your corporation's core competencies. So, if you're working for Ecoline, they're good at supporting scientific research into biology and ecology, and less good at juggling asteroids. Credicor, however, have deep pockets and an enthusiastic attitude toward orbital dynamics.
Era Sheets
Era Sheets describe the current state of Mars. There are four Eras in the game: the Pioneer Era of the earliest settlers, the duplicitous, fractious Corporate Era, the violence and uncertainty of Turmoil, and the brilliant summer of Green Mars. The Era Sheets affect what forms of Friction are available to the Game Master.
The values on Corporation and Era Sheets can be changed by the actions of the player characters. Did you successfully create a new ocean on Mars, or alter the composition of the atmosphere? That'll change the Hydrosphere or Atmosphere values on the Era Sheet. Did you build a new research lab for Ecoline? That'll boost the scientific help Ecoline can give you in future Projects.
Did your Project overrun hugely? Did things go horribly wrong? That'll be reflected too. You'll leave scars on Mars…
[End of transmission]

ACTUALIZACIÓN EN EL CUADERNO DE BITÁCORA DE MARTE: LAS CORPORACIONES
Queridos terraformadores:
5.1.1 Facciones no corporativas
UNMI, Tharsis Republic, Mining Guild, otras facciones

MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE: TERRAFORMING PROJECTS
Dear Terraformers,
The missions to achieve the greatest milestone in the history of Humanity continue their development under the leadership of their distinguished captains. Captain Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan and Captain Kenneth Hite continue to organize the efforts of the first settlers.
The success of these missions depends on many factors: information, research, planning, dedication, sacrifice… and, of course, adaptation. Much of this requires solid foundations and meticulous design.
Today, our authors want to share with you some of the key elements that will make Terraforming Mars: The Roleplaying Game a unique experience.
PROJECTS IN TERRAFORMING MARS
Just like in the boardgame, Projects are the core of Terraforming Mars: the Roleplaying Game. Dig a mohole. Thaw an aquifer. Genetically engineer Mars-tolerant lichen. Crash an asteroid. Build a city. The book contains dozens of Projects; The Great Mars Campaign, lots more.
To translate them into traditional roleplaying game terms, a Project is a combination of adventure hook, dungeon map, and boss monster.
Each Project consists of two pages; one for the players, one for the GM.
The player sheet describes what's needed – the goal of the Project, the milestones along the way, any special rules or assets, the budget – and shows a map of the Project space. This might be a literal map ("here's where you are on Mars"), an orbital trajectory ("you've got to get the thrusters installed before the asteroid enters this hex"), a conceptual map ("ok, we've got to choose between the lichen being poisonous to humans, and the lichen being less cold-tolerant than is ideal"), a relationship map, or one of the many other map-systems we're experimenting with.
There are lots of boardgames that tackle more abstract topics than normally crop up in roleplaying games, and the hexmap approach lets us borrow from them. For example, one of the earliest test projects I ran was "Genetically Engineer Mars-tolerant Shrimp"; the hexmap showed possible qualities of the engineered shrimp. Do the engineers try to go for the "increased reproductive rate" hex, even though it means risking the nearby "increased mutation" and "increased food consumption" hexes?
The GM side of the sheet lists potential problems, threats, opponents, and outcomes, as well as advice on how to run the project and the GM's Friction budget. We're also taking inspiration from one-page dungeons and other concentrated pellets of adventure content, cramming as much useful content into a single page as possible.
(There'll also be lots of advice in the book on designing your own projects, chaining projects together into a larger story, and combining Projects with other sorts of gameplay.)
Projects take time to complete – six months of game time on average, maybe two or three hours of actual play time at the table. Terraforming Mars is a roleplaying game about shaping the future over generations. Your campaigns span generations...
WORK CONTINUES ON MARS
The Terraforming Mars team continues working on design, writing, and illustration. We will keep you updated with new information about the project, its development, and the elements that will make your games truly shine.

ACTUALIZACIÓN DEL CUADERNO DE BITÁCORA DE MARTE: PROYECTOS DE TERRAFORMACIÓN
Queridos terraformadores:
Diseñar genéticamente líquenes tolerantes a Marte.

PROJECT UPDATE
Project Update: Mission Logbook Update: About Crew Dynamics
Mission Logbook Update: About Crew Dynamics
Dear terraformers,
We continue to make steady progress on Terraforming Mars: The Roleplaying Game, and we would like to share a new update from the development diary with you.
Our authors are moving forward at a good pace, in line with the mission schedule. This time, Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan brings us a status report on the development of this great undertaking on Mars.
He shares some of the key ideas that will shape the gameplay experience. You can find them below.
Crew Dynamics
The Terraforming Mars Roleplaying Game casts the players as a crew of scientists, engineers, explorers and technicians, building a new home on Mars. In most other roleplaying games, the challenge is in overcoming or outwitting opponents of one sort or another – the dungeon is full of orcs, the cultists don't want you investigating them, the city's vampires scheme against you. While there'll be people opposing you on Mars (no orcs, few cultists, and the vampires are in the corporate boardroom), the bigger challenges come from the environment – and from within your own team.
Stress is a key resource in Terraforming Mars. You take Stress to gain vitally needed bonus dice, you take Stress if you're the one shouldering the burden of the whole project – and you take Stress if your beliefs and drives crash with those of your team-mates.
Every Terraforming Mars character has an Ambition and carries some Baggage. These start out fairly abstract – my ambition is to get promoted. To push back the frontiers of science. To make a new life on Mars. My baggage is a fear of failure. It's my addiction to pain pills. It's my arrogance. Then, over the course of play, your Ambition and Baggage get hooked into people and things around you – often, your fellow crewmates. Ambition is easy – you want to get your Ambition hooked up, as it gives a small but useful bonus (and in a knife-edge situation, every bonus counts). But Baggage is out of your control. It'll crop up when you don't want it too. That technician – she was there when I messed up. She knows I'm a failure. I just caught a glimpse of the stock of painkillers in the medical bay, and now I can't stop thinking about them. Baggage generates Stress.
Too much Stress... and things go wrong. Dangerously wrong.
There are ways to deal with Stress. You can just take some downtime – but you're always up against the clock on a Project, so you won't always be able to take time. The alternative is to take Burnout.
Burnout doesn't affect your character during play – only at the end of a Project. Too much Burnout, and... well, there's a reason why Terraforming Mars character generation is very, very quick and easy.
Mars Art
In parallel, our illustrators and graphic designers are in contact with the writters and game designers to create new artwork for the project. Here is a preview that reflects Mars through its first stages.
Soon we will show you more examples.

PROJECT UPDATE
Project Update: Tarsis City reporting: Intense testing and some hints
Tarsis City reporting: Intense testing and some hints
Dear backers
The base in Tarsis City is reporting positive results! Our terraforming process has moved beyond the trial phase and is progressing toward its final form. In recent months, we have conducted intensive testing in private groups and at various gaming events, including Comic Con in Málaga last month, where Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan participated.
Here are some pictures from those days in Mars:
We have gathered all the necessary feedback from these tests and can confirm that the rules are effective and meet expectations. In Terraforming Mars, players must cooperate to overcome two formidable opponents that cannot be defeated by force: the hostile Martian habitat and humanity's worst impulses.
Building on the solid foundation of the simple yet spectacular Estirpe system, Gareth Ryder-Hanrahan and Kenneth Hite are fine-tuning the game to add new mechanics that intertwine personal stories, project by project, forming a tapestry of one of humanity's greatest achievements—establishing a home on another planet.
Each group of characters will be built around the terraforming project they must undertake. Their story will unfold intensely, shaping an episode in the great saga of the domestication of Mars. To accomplish this, the authors will expand the Mental Stress system found in the Starter Guide and introduce new character traits.
We'll share more details in future updates, but here's a sneak peek to whet your appetite.
- Each character will have Baggage from their past, such as unfinished business or an obsession that ties them to their previous mistakes.
- They will also have an Ambition—a goal, desire, or ideal to pursue.
Overcoming your Baggage can cause stress. However, working toward your Ambition can allow you to improve a roll, even if you aren't specialized in it. These two simple additions give the characters quite a bit of depth.
On schedule
The authors and the entire Terraforming Mars RPG team are doing a great job and meeting every milestone on the project's internal timeline. We're still working on the terraforming!
Stay tuned for future updates, as we'll continue to provide information on these and other aspects of the game's development.

Informe de Tarsis City: Muchas pruebas y algunas pistas
Queridos mecenas:
Enfrentarte a tu Bagage podrá generar Estrés.
