Project Update: MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE: INFORMED DECISIONS

MARS LOGBOOK UPDATE: INFORMED DECISIONS

Dear Terraformers,

Last days of September are already here, bringing autumn to Earth's northern hemisphere. As a Martian curiosity, this same month back in 2014, NASA's MAVEN probe entered orbit around Mars, after a ten-month journey, to study how the planet lost much of its atmosphere. The conditions of Mars's thin atmosphere will be one of the main risks to face. Both the pioneers (especially) and those already settled in their underground cities or domes will have to tackle the terraforming challenge of achieving an atmospheric pressure and composition that allows them to live.

To achieve this, they need a process. A way of doing things. Following a sequence, knowing both themselves and their goal. The real one. Aiming for and creating those small milestones that, step by step, project by project, will make Mars a habitable, terraformed place. All that effort and planning is what our authors have been pouring into this tabletop roleplaying game this whole time. Keep reading, as one of our authors talks to us about this process in the Terraforming Mars: the Tabletop Role-playing Game design notebook.

Project status

Work continues and the game keeps moving forward. The writing, testing, and polishing of some recent changes show the thoroughness and attention to detail we're putting into this project. The most important thing is preserving the spirit and quality of everything Terraforming Mars: the Tabletop Role-playing Game, is going to offer. Even if it takes a bit longer. The authors keep doing excellent work, drawing on their experience and know-how.

We're still in the trenches!

Mars Design Notebook: Informed Decisions

One of our authors wants to share with you how he thinks, what matters to him in his design work on Terraforming Mars: the Tabletop Role-playing Game, as well as the specific challenges it has posed for him.

Informed Decisions

"I started out writing adventures for my local convention, and that’s still my starting point with a design. Utility comes first.

How can this material be used at the table?

What do the players actually do?

How do they know what choices are available?

How can we convey the information the GM needs in an efficient and user-friendly way?

How can we support the GM?

Those questions get harder to answer as one moves away from the well-explored modes of roleplaying – the dungeon, the investigation, the characters as a self-contained band of wandering adventurers – but they still need to be tackled.

What do the players actually do? Mechanics aren’t my starting point, but informed choices.

Terraforming Mars: the tabletop role-playing game has proved a singular challenge to this approach. We decided long ago that we couldn’t do the game justice by just taking one of those well-established modes and tacking the Martian setting onto it. (Ok, you’re all UNMI space cops investigating murders on Mars or you’re a corporate mercenary strike team, and for some reason Teractor’s defences consist of just enough armed guards in a 20x20 room to provide a fun but not overwhelming tactical challenge.)

We knew we had to aim higher and stranger, which is how we ended up with the sequence-of-interlocking-projects-generational play. But that means that the choices for the players become more esoteric – it’s not go left or go right, it’s do we survey the outflow channels or the craters in Oxia Pallus? Figuring out how to give context and the information the players need for those choices to feel meaningful, without drowning the players and GM in information is a tricky challenge we’ve been working on solving.

The other challenge has been pushing the players towards conflict and dissent. Informed choices are pointless if the information makes the right choice obvious. You want the players to argue, to overrule each other, to bargain, to make tradeoffs. You want to pressurise the decision-making process. You want the whole thing to shake and shriek, but not fly apart completely under the strain.

It feels very much like a narrative engineering problem – how do we connect up the interpersonal strife generator with the semi-plausible terraforming science filter and the “abstract representation of mechanics” module?

And then iterate, iterate, iterate. Calibrate, calibrate, calibrate."

ACTUALIZACIÓN EN EL CUADERNO DE BITÁCORA DE MARTE: DECISIONES INFORMADAS

Queridos terraformadores:

Y luego, iterar, iterar, iterar. Calibrar, calibrar, calibrar».
