Project Update: Donations, reviews, and ratings!

Hi internet friends,

Some great news to share:

During the campaign, we pledged to donate $1 per backer to nonprofits working in climate and environmental justice causes. We sent those donations late last year, and I wanted to share where it went!

  • $5,000 to WE ACT: This organization works on behalf of communities of color and low income residents in NYC to keep them prioritized in environmental planning, policy, and decision making.
  • $5,000 to BSSK: The Indian nonprofit BSSK (Baikunthapur Sishu Seva Kendra) focuses on rural people of in the Sundarbans, where its citizens are regularly affected by devastating storms, rainfall, floods, and drinking water contamination.Β

BSSK used the funds to support awareness and training of close to 300 participants on climate change impacts, hygiene, and sanitation. Here's a pic of one of the sessions:

What else? One of our favorite boardgame channelsβ€”No Pun Includedβ€”had a GREAT review of Daybreak:

And finally, we hope you've had a chance to play Daybreak! if you have, do you have a second to drop a rating on Boardgamegeek?

https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/334986/daybreak/ratings?rated=1&comment=1

10s only. Just kidding. But really. Kidding! Do what your heart tells you.

Project Update: Box damage survey

Hi all,

Now that nearly everyone has received their copy of Daybreak (woo! πŸ₯³) we're going to make things right on the box issues that some folks had.

If your box was damaged, please fill out this survey:

https://forms.gle/Ngu58rM9Qbznzwcf8

You'll see that there are 4 options that you can choose:

  1. Get a replacement box mailed to you
  2. Get a 40% off discount code at cmyk.games
  3. Get a $15 refund
  4. Just note that you had an issue, but don't need anything

And please reply if you had *any* box issues, even if you're going to choose #4, just so we know the extent of the issue. And for any non-box replacement parts, email us at [email protected] instead.

Thanks!

Project Update: Shipping update 🚚🌏

Hi all,

Quick update on shipping:

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ/πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ US and Canada are done! Email us at [email protected] if you don't have your copy.

🌏/🌍 Everyone else, all the shipments have been tested and approved! You should be getting an email from ShipQuest (or GamesQuest, or one that mentions Palm Court) confirming your address. That will be open for a few days and then shipping will begin IMMEDIATELY. So mid next week, if things go like they did for Canada.

Hope everyone who got their copies are enjoying the game! And thrilled to be getting this final set out in time for holiday game nights :)

Thanks so much for sticking with us, everyone. Really appreciate your patience.Β

Happy weekend!

Project Update: Box issues πŸššπŸ“¦πŸ’₯

Hey all,

We're getting reports that 10-20% of backers are having issues with the game boxes breaking and stickers opening/tearing. As you can probably guess, the issue stems from not using plastic coating/reinforced tape on a box containing such a heavy game. We're so sorryβ€”we know it's such a bummer to get a messed up box. We had done a LOT of successful testing prior to shipping, but the failure rate is clearly unacceptable.Β

Here's our solution: if you receive a damaged box, don't worry for now, just play as normal. Once we've figured out the best way to reprint and repackage the boxes, we'll send out a survey where you can either:

  1. Get a new box, or
  2. Get a partial refund, or
  3. Register that your box had issues, but are OK just taping it up

International backers, we're working on a way to pack yours to make sure these issues don't happen! But if they do, it'll be the same deal, where you can request a new box or partial refund if you like.

OK, bummer news over. And other than this box thing, copies of Daybreak seem to be arriving and getting played! Let us know if you've had a chance to play yet!Β

Onward and upward,Β

Project Update: Shipping soon πŸŽ‰πŸ“¦

Hi friends,

I'll keep this short: we're getting CLOSE. Here's an update on when you should expect your copy to ship:

πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ - US copies arriving at the fulfillment center TOMORROW (November 7)
πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ - Canada copies have arrived at the fulfillment center
🌏 - Asia copies have arrived at the fulfillment center
πŸ‡¦πŸ‡Ί/πŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ - AU/NZ copies are in transit from port to fulfillment center, as of 11/1
πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ί/πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ - EU/UK copies will arrive in port November 14

We don't have any control over when copies ship from fulfillment centers, but it should be quite soon after arriving. And once they ship, you'll be getting tracking info and such.Β

And as always, if you have any address changes, let us know NOW at [email protected] – it might already not be possible, but now's the time.

So excited for you all to get your copies!!!!

Project Update: 🚒 Toot toot

Hi friends,

So sorry for the waitβ€”we've been working hard to get Daybreak fulfillment done and copies in your hands as soon as humanly possible.Β

We ran into a couple final complicated and tedious logistics issues that delayed us again. Turns out making and shipping things with no plastics adds…complexity 😬

BUT the good news is that the cargo ships are BOOKED and copies will be headed your way soon! Here's the delivery timeline:

US backers - Boat (YM TROPHY V.009E) sails 10/6, arrives in port 10/20, arrives at warehouse 10/27-10/30, fulfilled 10/28-11/3, arrive to backers 11/1-11/8

Canada backers - Picked up yesterday, still working on boat details (will post in comments), should be around the same time as US

Asia backer - Truck picked up from factory yesterday, should be around the same time as US

UK/EU/Rest of World backers - Boat (working on ID, will post in comments) sails 10/2, should be around the same time as US, maybe a tiny bit later because it takes longer to sail

AU/NZ backers - Boat (EVER URBAN 0175S) sails 10/2, arrives in port 10/18, should be around the same time as US

tldr: November delivery, basically for everyone.

And if you need to change your shipping address or anything like that, just email us at [email protected]

Apologies again for the delay, but that time was definitely worth it to make sure you're getting the best product possible!Β

More soon, but in the meantime, check out the photo of the final box:

The Daybreak box

We're so proud of the final result and CANNOT WAIT to get copies to you!!!!

Project Update: Shipping address lock + cards charging SOON πŸ”’πŸ’Έ

Hi all!

We're getting ready to put your copies on Daybreak on a cargo ship, so we'll be locking shipping address on Friday, August 11 and charging cards on Saturday, August 12.

If you have any final changes to those, now is the time:

https://help.backerkit.com/article/638-how-do-i-update-my-shipping-address

Otherwise, the only news is good news: Daybreak factory assembly is completely finished and looking great! Included the dreaded pulp trays:

Everything is really secure in the boxes, and we're *thrilled* with how all these final touches turned out.

We're still on track to ship in September, so it won't be long now!

Project Update: How to Play video is live πŸŽ₯

Hi all,

Got a big update for you todayβ€”we just published the How to Play video for Daybreak!

Check it out here:

https://youtu.be/z8GH1j7-sg8

I'm biased, but I think it's one of the best one of these that I've ever seen for a boardgame? Hope you agree!

HUGE shoutout to Richard Reininger for directing the vid, the cast and crew, and The Adrienne Arsht-Rockefeller Foundation Resilience Center (Arsht-Rock), who funded us making something so ambitious.

And then finally, a quick update on production: conservative estimate is that the games ship from the factory early August, and are shipping to you in September. Apologies again for the delay, but everything should be smooth sailing (literally) from here and it will be 100% worth it in the end.

Enjoy the vid!

Project Update: Slight delay ugh

Hey all,

We received what we were hoping was the final sample of Daybreak last month. While all the game components look and feel *great*, we ran into an issue withβ€”of all thingsβ€”the storage trays.

Basically, there was a miscommunication with the factory and the trays were created using a different material than we specified: they made something out of thick cardboard rather than the thin bagasse fiber we needed for them to seal properly.

What we got:

What we need:

As you can probably tell, the current tray was super prone to opening and spilling components everywhere, since they don't really have any sort of friction fit to them. We don't want to deliver your game with this issueβ€”and with our commitment to no plastics, that also means no quick fix measures like rubber band or nylon straps or anything like that.Β

So unfortunately we're delayed briefly to redo these trays to make the best possible game for you. Worst case, we lose a couple months, but it really will be worth it.Β

In the meantime, we'll keep the backerkit shipping address and add-on page open, if anyone needs to change anything. And we'll give you a few days notice before locking those, probably next month.

Huge apologies for the delay and the pre-weekend bad news. Otherwise though, everything is so beyond our expectations and I'm so excited to get copies to you once we've fixed this.

Then finally, on a better note, this week we had this really nice ABC News piece about Daybreak's development:

https://abcnews.go.com/US/board-game-designers-aim-make-tackling-climate-change/story?id=99575350

Have a great weekend!

Project Update: Shipping surveys coming soon! πŸ“¦

Hi friends,

Quick update for the weekend: you're getting shipping surveys over the next few days! As you check out, you'll be able to add extra copies and such.

In terms of shipping prices, we worked really hard to get those rates to be as painless as possible for you all. So to that end, and to thank you for believing in our project from the beginning, we're covering 50%+ of the shipping costs ourselves. Which is *checks notes* $100K+ (yikes).

I'll have more info on specific delivery dates and tracking info soon, but we're basically done with production, so it's just a matter of getting copies on boats and to your region of the world now. Long story short: assume the boats are all on time, we'll be shipping to you in late June-ish, within a month of our original estimate!Β

Here's the final packout, which is extremely satisfying to me, a hater of air:

Have a great weekend!

Project Update: Getting CLOSE

Hi friends,

Some great news: Daybreak is about to go into production!

We received our pre-production samples, and everything is looking SO good. I was absolutely floored when I saw the sample.

Here are some preview shots:

The Europe player board, with some tokens and cards (look at those colors!!!):

And the Global Project cards to the left of the central board:

Once everything is in production, we're going to pivoting over to creating a great how to play video for you, and finalizing the Daybreak website, which will have individual pages for thematic and gameplay details for every. card. in. the. game.

And if you're curious to get started early, here's the rulebook:

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1j_xjOoCkz7mOwelLAi7-MEG8NtCOYXal/view?usp=share_link

What's next? In April, we'll be sending out the survey where you can give us your address, add copies of other games if you like, and complete shipping.

Hope you're as excited about this milestone as we are!!!!

Project Update: Sneak peek

Hello Daybreak friends!

This month is crunch time for finalizing all the game's components: cards, tokens, pulp trays, player boards, etc. Everything is starting to feel *very real* which is always my favorite moment of creating a game.

I know I've mentioned this before, but working on all these art files really underscores that Daybreak is absolutely STUFFED with incredible components. And we're really sweating the details of getting the most stunning, polished version of the game to you.

Here's a quick screencap of the WIP deck of local projects alone:

All 158 local project cards!

PHEW.

We're still looking good to deliver on schedule, so after this update, I'm going to transform right back into a squinty Adobe Illustrator goblin.

But before then, I wanted to share a recent writeup of Daybreak from the Guardian:

https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2023/jan/28/board-games-climate-crisis-daybreak

And I'm happy to say that this goes against Betteridge's law of headlinesβ€”assuming we do our job right, you'll absolutely learn a thing or two from the game πŸ˜…Β

OK, that's all for now! I'll be in touch early next month to get the pledge manager up and running: you'll be able to update addresses, add on games, and all that other good stuff.

Talk soon,

Alex.

Project Update: Quick update

Happy holidays Daybreak friends!

It's been a minute, so I wanted to give you all a quick update on Daybreak:

β€’ We were featured on BBC Sounds! You can hear Matteo interviewed starting at timestamp 01:11 here:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/p0dn67jm

β€’ We're working with Schultzschultz to redraw all game's icons and tokens to be as legible, clear, and visually consistent as possible.

Progress is about 90% finished, but this should give you a sense of our progress:
Old versus new card tags

β€’ We're 99% done with all the illustrations in the game! Phew. That was a lot of work.

We just got the near-final batch of Global Project cards from Denis Freitas, which were the last big chunk of art.

The Global Projects represent huge social, technological, and political innovations at a global level, so we wanted to them to look more futuristic and speculative than the rest, while still in the realm of the possible.Β

Here are a few we love:

β€’ We're aiming to have the main board, player board, and all components finalized by the end of this month, then onto completing the rules!

And yes, we're still right on target in terms of delivering Daybreak to you on time :)

Happy holidays and talk soon,

Alex (& Matt & Matteo & Justin)

We're going to go silent for a bit while we put the finishing touches on everything, but if you have any burning questions, definitely post them in the forum! We'll be hanging out there the entire time.

OK, time for us to get back to work! But first, some of my fav new art we've gotten in:

Project Update: πŸ“— Design Diary 6 – Replayability

Matt here for the sixth and final episode of the Design Diaries. In the previous episodes we explored the design goals, antagonists, resources, players and powers, and how the game is won and lost.Β

Since we've hit our 8,000 backer goal (Yay!), we're here today to share a bit more about the challenge card deck and how it makes the game even more replayable.

Replayability

Say you survived your first game, but can you do it again while keeping temperatures lower, while avoiding certain solutions, or while creating an even more resilient society?

For a long time, we didn’t give the question of replayability much brainspace, as we were busy developing the core game. We just imagined players could make the game harder by starting with a higher temperature, or resolving more crisis cards each round.
Early versions used a variable thermometer to increase difficulty

While this effectively made the game more difficult to win, it was also a very limited system. So Alex suggested we take inspiration from The Crew’s mission deck and think about how we can present players a scalable set of new challenges and narratives over time.

We immediately liked the idea, and developed a deck of about 40 challenges and advantages, which players can combine to make the game easier or harder, either for individual players or for the whole team.Β

Group Challenges, Advantages, and Modifiers

The challenges span from starting values modifiers (eg: one player starts with less resilience, more emissions of a certain type, or more communities in crisis) to additional victory conditions (eg: in order to win, we have to also keep global warming below 1.5ΒΊC, or have 100% clean energy generation, or have no communities in crisis) and rule modifiers (eg: if one of my stacks has more than 4 cards, I must discard the excess cards).

Sample team challenges

The advantages can also modify starting values, rules or win conditions, in order to give players an easier journey.

Sample team advantages

Rule modifier cards allow players to explore counterfactual scenarios. For example, who is responsible for the emissions β€œembedded” in all the products we buy in the Global North, but are manufactured in the Global South? What if we used a framework that doesn’t just take into account the emissions produced within the borders of a country (aka territorial emissions) but also those that are imported (aka consumption emissions)? How does that shift the game balance?
A sample team modifier

Individual Challenges and Advantages

In addition to the challenges, advantages, and modifiers that affect the whole team, we added the ability to adjust the game by handing out challenges and advantages for individual world powers. You can use these on their own (for example to make the game harder or easier for a specific player or each of the players) or you can combine them with the cards that affect the whole team.

The result is a rich landscape of options for adjusting the game. You can make the game different, harder, or easier – or even harder in some ways but more difficult in others. And you can do this for each player or for the team.

Sample challenges and advantages for individual players

Wrapping Up

As our design diaries come to a close, we’d like to leave you with this quote from Parable of the Sower:

β€œThere’s no single answer that will solve all of our future problems.
There’s no magic bullet.
Instead there are thousands of answers – at least.
You can be one of them if you choose to be.”
– Octavia E. Butler
