Hey, hey future Bloodlings!

I hope all is well. I'm sending out updates and getting ready to fulfill everyone's pledges, but there's just something I have to know:

For those who haven't pledged yet, what's stopping you?

I'd love to include you in my decision-making process, but the only way I can do that is if you respond to my polls and discussions. So, be honest with me.

In fact, make it as brutal as it needs to be, because I value your opinion and I'm hoping to build a long-term community.

So, drop a comment telling me what I can do better, or if there's something I need to explain better, or just to vent. Whatever it is, let me know in the comments, and I'll do my best to offer you the reward you deserve.

Thanks!

This week, I'm giving you a Novel Planner you can use to plan your NaNoWriMo book! Download your planner here.

You’re official! Download this Mystic Storyteller Backer Certificate and shareable Backer Badge as keepsakes and share on your social media accounts! We want these to serve as fun reminders that this project would not have been possible without YOU.

After this week...

Starting Monday, September 9, I will be sending out weekly motivational card pulls, writing support, and more free resources each Monday to your email inbox.

Until then, if you haven't already added me as a contact, please do: Amanda Hughes [email protected].

I'd hate for your Camp MST goodies to end up in that pesky spam folder!

See you in your inbox for Camp MST WEEK 6!

In friendship and gratitude,

CREATOR
So I recently devoured the romantasy streaming series MY LADY JANE and loved it; it is unrelentingly goofy and endearing, and I have a huge crush on both of the leads, they're delightful. I try to take a wide lens on fantasy romance for somewhat obvious reasons, in the same way that I do for sword & sorcery, and if you're going to offer me eight episodes of something this funny and this horny, what can I say? I will sign up.

That said: outside of all of the other cleverness of the show, I spent a lot of time thinking about the music cues, which trend very contemporary (which, to me, adds to the goofy charm, but I can easily see someone without a sterner stomach struggling with it) and usually these music cues trend specifically to "cover of a modern pop song by a girl-pop band" type choices. It feels unconventional, but to me says something about the audience they want to capture and entertain, and I think it works.

This, of course, led me to a question that might be really polarizing:

What sort of music would you put to a fight scene--or a love scene!--in a romantic fantasy, especially in sword & sorcery, where atmosphere is a huge part of the appeal?

--scenes you might want to write?
--scenes you have already read?
--scenes you might be hoping for in our fair tome?

There are no wrong answers, but I'm dying to know what you might pick!

Nota bene:
Please don't slag anyone else's choices--it takes all kinds, and sometimes something really unexpected works well to highlight a scene that might be very understated with the "expected" choices!

Obviously we here at New Edge Sword & Sorcery have made it clear we'd like to see a larger, wider variety of peoples and cultures represented more frequently in both stories and those who are telling them...

...but what would YOU like to see?

I, Oliver, would - beyond the inclusivity aspect - love to see more...

Draping S&S like a cloak over another genre. Robert E. Howard himself did this all the time. The God in the Bowl is an S&S locked room mystery. Beyond the Black River is an S&S frontier western tale. You get the idea…

To be clear, this is not blending genres, putting cowboys in with barbarians etc. This is using some or all of the format of another genre to tell an S&S tale, in an S&S setting, with S&S characters.

Non-monarchial secondary worlds or kingdoms. We can do anything in a secondary world, it doesn’t always have to be kings and queens.

Sword & Planet. I love this niche within a niche and fancy seeing more of it, perhaps in a New Edge vein!

How about you all?

Just got my coin holder today, and I've got to say, the tolerances leave something to be desired. I can't leave it standing up as some of the coins don't fit with enough friction to keep them in if it is standing, mainly the bondsmith, edgedancer, and elsecaller coins. The edgedancer is the worst as due to the design, the coin is not completely round. they don't fit well at all if spren side is down, which is fine, but I really wanted to be able to stand this up on my sandershelf wihtout needing to attach the coins somehow.
