Project Update: Dice Color Poll Results

Hello from England! I am visiting for the United Kingdom Games Exposition - if you happen to be going, please look me up . . .

Because some backers let us know they didn't prefer swirly dice colors, we ran a quick poll, with images. We had 3,929 votes, which is awesome. It means that over a third of you participated! Politicians, at least the honest kind, would KILL for that level of involvement. Let's not get into why honest politicians would be killing anybody – I can tell when a metaphor is overstretched!

At any rate, the vote was 3,474 for swirly, and 455 for solid/opaque. That seems pretty definite, so we will be swirling.

Thanks to everybody who expressed an opinion either way. We want to listen to you, and that is easier when you say something  :)

Cephalophair sucks! I am also still waiting for my B&B box to be delivered. So I contacted the company managing the fullfilment for Germany. I talked to a very nice guy. He found my order and told me that it is still on hold (not to be delivered soon because it will be delivered with the "envelope X" from the base game, but they ran out of stock for the envelopes). Of course they contacted Cephalofair to restock them but didn't get an answer. Nice! Hey Ceph, do your job! You promised to learn and improve your handling of comunication with backers and the fullfilment process. You just didn't. You still suck at that. So my order is still on hold until they will eventually hear from Ceph. The guy will meet them at the UKGE this weekend and talk to them about the missing items. He offered to split the order and send the B&B box now and the envelope when it will eventually show up. I declined because I do not want to complicate matters. Cephalophair, you suck. Your promises are all lies, you make your backers get the information they need all by themselves.

I pledged for B&B and the Frosthaven playbooks, but still haven’t received anything, not even a tracking number. They should be shipped separately - I guess, since I paid for two waves of shipping - and all of B&B should have been shipped by the end of last week. Is anybody experiencing the same problem?

Project Update: 13 Parsecs: A Fun Something to Play With

So Derek put together something for us to use as inspiration in our home games, but it was so useful I decided to turn it into a web app that everyone could access for their own games. It's a planetary data file generator that will whip up a full planet for you to play with, whether it's for a sci-fi story you're writing, a campaign your building, or even just a one-off pulp adventure. All you do is type a character (any character at all - you can even name the planet if you like), hit "enter," and voila! A full planetary data file kicks up.

This is all to celebrate the fact that we are less than $1,000 away from hardcovers and leathers!!! With ten days to go, there's never been a better time. The faster we get there, the more time we'll have to collect pledges on the leatherbound books, and unlock even more stretch goals! How amazing would it be if we could make Thirteen Parsecs the very first full color release for Elf Lair Games???

Check out the planetary data file generator at https://www.elflair.com/13p and spread the word to help us cross that big stretch goal!

Could we have more information about the differences between the 2 sets ? I mean I can read every character card, but it is hard to figure out how they will work together. Are the sets completely equivalent ? Or is there one better suited for big/little groups, beginner/experienced players ? Any difference in dynamics or style of play would be welcome, in order to be able to choose which box is best for me.

Project Update: Little Red Mascot Art and Dice Set Reveal for Big Bad Con

One fun part of helping out with Big Bad Con crowdfunding is getting to select this year's swag. This post is all about the dice set and screen printed tote bag, which are both part of Big Red’s Satchel and available as add ons.

Little Red and Wolf Dice Set

As a gaming convention, custom dice was a favorite among the staff. Simultaneously, Sean had just had a good experience working with Wood Tactics to make custom wooden dice for the upcoming Stewpot TTRPG.

I love strange dice materials. Wooden dice have a rustic quality that works well with our two fairytale mascots who are featured on the dice. We chose d6s so that we had a large side to engrave an image. 2d6 works well for anyone playing Powered by the Apocalypse games. Given all of this, we decided we wanted to make 2d6 wooden dice, with a custom graphic for each mascot.

The graphics for Wolf and Red needed to be fairly simplistic, but evocative. A few years ago, Tabletop Hotdish made this awesome Wolf and Little Red pattern for some exclusive zine notebooks they made for us:

A repeating black and red pattern on a notebook cover with tessellating wolf’s heads and stylized red hooded capes.

The art had clean lines and an iconic feel, exactly what we were looking for. We licensed the two images from Tabletop Hotdish and then our graphic designer Cris worked her magic to ready them for the dice. We just received this picture of the dice:

A handful of the Little Red and Wolf dice on a slate grey tabletop. The Little Red dice are a warm honey-colored cherrywood with Little Red's iconic riding hood in red on the 6 face. The Wolf dice are a rich deep brown walnut wood with a black wolf silhouette on the 6 face.

Little Red Mascot Reveal and Tote Plans

Each year our mascots Little Red and The Wolf are drawn with different costumes and in different genres, and this year is no different. This year’s concept is wolf as a crooning bard and a roguish little red. Our artist Eden Parkinson has knocked it out of the park again this year!
Line art sketches of the Wolf as a bard and little red, crouched and holding a purse. There’s one more rendered image of wolf with a lute and pantaloons, singing.

In the past we’ve featured Little Red and The Wolf on t-shirts, and this year we’re also screen printing her on a tote! We aimed to get a large tote that could hold a full TTRPG book haul (and maybe even a board game or two) and act as a large canvas to showcase the awesome mascot art. We're currently planning on a canvas tote with a zipper.

An image of a large, creme colored zippered tote, with a space for a logo that says "Your Logo Here"

Our mascot line art is in, and we’re excited to share it: Without further ado, here is this year’s Little Red mascot art!

Little red, dressed in fantasy rogue attire with a hooded cape with ears, doing an crouched action pose and holding a bag of loot
We want to make sure the tote image is resistant to a little wear and tear, so we’re screen printing a two color image. The tote image will be a simplified version of this image with three colors (black, red, and the creme of the tote).

Thank you and more soon!

We are so excited for folks to get their hands on this swag. While there likely will be limited availability swag at the con itself, if you want to ensure you get dice, totes and beyond, you can order them as add-ons throughout the Big Bad Con crowdfunding. Note that you must have a badge as part of your purchase, since all of the swag is picked up on location, at Big Bad Con.

Finally, another big thank you! We have raised over $60k to put on Big Bad Con (!!!) and a truly humbling portion of that is scholarship and con donations. These are funds that go straight into lowering the barriers to attendance for our marginalized community members and make Big Bad Con even more amazing - including supporting the 15 stretch goal guests and the new Big Bad Academy track. From all of the con staff, thank you for your support and we’re so excited to see you at Big Bad!

Project Update: Closing in on the Home Stretch Redux

FIRST: sorry to those of you who get this twice. I forgot to mark an important check box when I sent this. If you already got this, please ignore it with my apologies.

Just a very quick update for you all, folks! As of this writing we have 11 days left on the campaign. We are still creeping forward, but we could use a big push to get us over the top! We only have just over $1,200 to go to hit the hardcover stretch goal, which as a reminder will see ALL PRINT PLEDGE LEVELS UPGRADED FOR FREE to an offset hardcover print volume which will be smyth sewn and match the presentation and quality of Wasted Lands and Night Shift.

In addition, if we hit this level, we will UNLOCK A NEW PLEDGE LEVEL FOR LEATHERBOUND COPIES of the book! This will enable those of you who have the leathers of the other two games to complete the set. In addition, these leathers will also feature ribbon bookmarks. AT LEAST TWO new pledge levels will be unveiled at this point: one for just a leather copy and one for a standard and a leather copy. We may offer additional levels matching the "13 Parsecs Plus Night Shift/Wasted Lands" standard pledges as well, if we don't think it will create option bloat.

How can you help? If you're at the print level and would like to see the leathers, upgrade your pledge to the all-in pledge level! This will help boost us over the top. Then you can change your pledge over to the leathers when that level goes live! The sooner we get there, the sooner we get those leathers and the more time people will have to pledge them...which will lead to even more exciting levels such as a bigger art budget, full color printing, GM screens, adventure modules, and even VTT support!

In addition, if you're an international backer, just a reminder that we will be able to offer you a POD option for your print books to help offset shipping costs, so you can help by upgrading to a print level if you're in at the PDF level!

Finally, share the campaign everywhere you can! Let everyone know and spread the word! If you have a gaming group, get them on board as well! If you can't upgrade your pledge that's fine! We appreciate everything you have done for us from the bottom of our hearts. Every backer counts, and your pledge already means the world. Best of all, by backing us you are helping a small publisher. The so-called "Big Boys" don't need your pledge. For us every dollar means everything!

Thanks again for making this book a reality! Let's finish big!

Hey everyone,

As mentioned in yesterday's update, we are looking at the 19mm dice and we want to be sure that we're picking the right look. Take a look at the dice below, and let us know if you prefer the solid/opaque style dice, or the swirl/pearlized versions more. Your vote will help inform us!

Voting ends this Sunday at noon central!
